Thanks for the help everyone. Lenovo was no help other than a format & reinstall option. I mentioned I was worried the issue could come back since the laptop has a new motherboard, but they acted like that shouldn't have caused it. I did get a product key from the proper department and it worked. They were a little disgruntled that we had to waste a product key for this, as was I, but it worked. They did let me know that the all the laptops should ship with a Win7 COA license, so looks like Lenovo dropped the ball on this laptop.
