Windows Update: Error Code 80070246

Hey guys,

So I cannot use windows update, as every time I try to search for updates, I get this error code. I have tried everything I can find, including restoring windows update, wiping the update history and re setting all settings. I also downloaded and ran Microsoft Fix It, to no avail. I have also ran SFC Fix It, which created the following text document. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

P.S I cannot install Windows Visual C++ 2005 Re distributable, which I need to run a CAD modelling software package called Solid Works. Any help on this issue too? Are they related?

Thanks, Josh

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

Heres the One Drive link to the components file: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resi...nt=file%2c.zip

Also, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable error is as follows:

Error 1935.An error occured during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.ATL,type="win32",version="8.0.50727.762",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processor Architecture="amd64"". Please refer to help and support for more information.

This should get rid of the registry errors -

I've uploaded a file - jgwaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
COPY %userprofile%\desktop\jgwaa\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run a CheckSUR scan - post the full new CheckSUR.log file.

then run an SFC /SCANNOW, and post the full CBS.log file

... although I actually asked for the full SFC /SCANNOW rather than an SFCFix report.

It looks like I missed one of the errors, so I'll try again a bit later

SFCFix also seems to have missed one

I'll try and fix that at the same time.

Not a problem - it's just that there's a lot of data in the CBS.log that isn't parsed by SFCFix (yet) -and I don't fully trust it (also, yet )
That CBS log is really just a string of errors relating to the corrupted registry errors - no background data at all, yet.
I'll post the (hopefully) repaired registry asap.
