Windows 7 x64 SP1 Update failure

Got it uploaded, finally (it's a 100MB file, even compressed!)

I've uploaded a file - mkoab.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\mkoab
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\mkoab
or
DIR E:\mkoab



The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...



XCOPY <drive>:\mkoab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h



(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )



run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Hmm - I haven't seen that error, personally...
It could mean a number of things, only one of which is a potentially failing hard drive.
Running a CHKDSK would be a good idea, except that the necessary access probably won't be available, since the partition involved isn't usually available to Windows.

Try it anyhow - on the C: partition, at least...
Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Look for the results of the scan in the Event Viewer- it's stored in the Applications log, with Source Wininit.

Running the commands from Safe Mode will just give errors, rather than work - it's why we have to go to the RE frame to do it.

I think that you should check the Hard Drive. That was my initial assessment.
If necessary download Crystal Disc and run the hard drive test.

No errors during CHKDSK, when running the SFC scan though:

Function Windows resources protection has found damaged files, but isn't able to repair some of them. Details have been saved in CBS Logs.

I'm not sure now if I've seen this message during previous attempts, but hope it's not so important now.

It looks quite OK at the first glance: Windows has checked files system and hasn't found any problems.

And to end with a glimmer of hope - today's attempt to install the unlucky SP1 update was... less unsuccessful than it used to be.
When I tried to install it before, it finished with an error message after a while. Now the first stage seems alright, then it reboots the system to complete the installation. When it finishes, a process of "Reversing changes" begins and Windows launches normally. I get a message in Windows Update window that the update has been installed, but after a while it changes its mind and wants me to install SP1 again.
In update history this attempt is still marked as failed, but I see it's getting better :)

Ok, then - you need to download either a Repair disk, or a full Windows 7 install disk, and burn the disk, then boot from that and select the option to repair your computer.
