Windows 7 - Genuine Issues Leading to Unable to Update/Install Windows

Hi,

I am a tech idiot and I need help. I appreciate anything anyone can do.

For several months I have been getting messages that our windows may not be genuine. It came installed on our Dell and we bought directly from Dell so I basically ignored it. Recently we got a message that it is not genuine in the bottom right corner of the screen and windows things on the screen started to look clumsy and not run right.

I tried many times to follow the validation processes to fix this but it would never complete. I had my stepson try to fix it and he is a computer pro. He tried remotely and came back saying that the windows version itself was apparently too corrupt and I needed to reinstall it from the original disk - which seems to have got lost in a move. Ugghhh. Oh yeah, several times in my efforts I was told to run chkdsk - did so and it identified different issues, seemed to fix them but made no difference in my ability to fix the validation issue.

So, I bit the bullet and went out to BestBuy and got a Windows 7 Builders Pack. I tried to update windows several times using it - no go. It got to the same point every time and quit. It basically said there was a file that was not correct and install could not be completed. So, I decided to back up and do a full install. Same result. I am at my wit's end. I ran the diagnostic below. Before I try more dramatic moves like hard drive replacement - or new computer, I thought I would give it a last go here.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

So, you`ve reinstalled windows 7, you`ve downloaded the network drivers from dell.com and installed them, and you`ve tried to activate windows with the key on your COA or the key from the system builder pack, and it will not activate ?

And you`re saying you went to BestBuy and they had a Windows 7 builder pack ????????

Amazing How much was that, if you don`t mind me asking ?

If you used that license it should say OEM System Builder, but yours says OEM SLP which means System Locked Pre-Installation. Are you sure you`re trying the right key from BestBuy ?

The computer is 4 years old....ran fine all this time. The builder pack from BB cost me 109.99 free delivery. I have been unable to successfully install or update windows after many attempts. I get file error messages midway in the file expansion section.

It is simply NOT POSSIBLE to purchase any Windows package with an OEM SLP Key, unless it's pre-installed in a computer.

The Key here is for a DELL computer - which yours appears to be.
However, any purchased OS will require that proper Key with which it shipped to be used for activation.

The non-genuine problem is caused by the File Mismatches shown here..

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data - the same data is needed for this problem as for WU problems.

Okay - have tried to follow the instructions as best I could. Made the system repair disc - no issues there. Loaded it in the computer and started to run the sfc/scannow cmd and it started the verification phase. It only got to 16% and then it quit saying "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I tried twice and got to exactly the same point each time.

Man this sucks. Any more suggestions? I appreciate the help.

By the way sorry it is taking me so long to respond but I am fitting this ion when I can find time.
