When I asked about where you purchased the laptop, I wanted details - a big-box shop is safe, while the pawn shop down the road is very much more likely to have counterfeits (knowingly or not!). If you bought it from an online store, then it depends which store.

Please do NOT post a picture of your sticker! - we all know what one looks like ( see here if you're not certain - How to Tell ? Hardware)

The Office installation is using a blocked Volume License Key - it's a common counterfeit.

I'm having a similar issue. I bought an "upgrade" package fir Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I have the original Windows Vista DVD (a true disc) but I want to install W7 on new hardware. Previously, it would allow me to put in the prior (true) disc and then continue with the install. It did not, in this case. It would not accept the Win 7 product key because it didn't recognize (obviously) that I had upgraded from Windows Vista.

Is my only option now to uninstall W7, Install Windows Vista and then W7 over the top of it? Can I, at least, phone Microsoft and get an activation code when I'm ready to activate (I don't activate immediately - I wait until the install is stable).

All help appreciated...

Thanks much. As it turns out, I've been on the forum for a bit, just not posting as much.

It also turns out that it's no longer an issue. I was able to activate successfully this evening, albeit perhaps, not wanting to so quickly. If I have to do a full re-install, I'll have to call the center again. Ah well.

Thanks much...
