Please upload the following files (compressed) again - the errors may have changed.

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
    C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

Please also upload the Application and System Event logs...

    Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
    Save the file as Appevt.evtx
    Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

You apparently have Office Click-to-Run installed?
This is probably from a Trial version of Office 2010 preinstalled by the manufacturer. If you don't use it, then I would suggest uninstalling it as it appears to be generating a number of errors.
There's nothing really other than that in the Event logs - a few minor errors, but nothing related that I can see.

    Next stop, the WU log.

It looks to me like the problem is with the downloading...
    Code:
    2014-04-25 13:00:29:032 992 bb8 DnldMgr *********** DnldMgr: New download job [UpdateId = {F9A1DEF5-D9D1-45B7-999B-A6415B2CB581}.200] ***********
    2014-04-25 13:00:29:032 992 bb8 DnldMgr Regulation: {7971F918-A847-4430-9279-4A52D1EFE18D} - Update F9A1DEF5-D9D1-45B7-999B-A6415B2CB581 is "PerUpdate" regulated and can NOT download. Sequence 9120 vs AcceptRate 200.

2014-04-25 13:00:29:032 992 958 AU AU checked download status and it changed: Downloading is paused
    2014-04-25 13:00:30:577 992 bb8 Report CWERReporter finishing event handling. (00000000)

However, I don't see why that should impact here..

Please open an Elevated COmmand Prompt, and run the following commands...

    Code:

    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate"
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update" /S

    .
    post the results

I have "Microsoft word starter" which I assume came preinstalled on the laptop. Its not amazing but I do use it to type out all my yearly appraisals/feed back etc.

I will check the other thing now and post results

It looks to me as if AU is set to properly, at least.

All the entries look right, although there area couple of oddities...
    ScheduledInstallDate REG_SZ 2014-04-27 02:00:00
    DownloadExpirationTime REG_SZ 2014-04-27 19:58:21
...which don't exist in any of my installs.

I'd rather not mess with them, as I don't know what they're for. :)
Those entries actually look as if they are from WSUS or another Push service - which may mean that the are coming from a GP that's been enabled for some reason, and that could be what's blocking manual checks.

The problem here is that GP's aren't supposed to be able to run in Home Premium - which means that it has to be a registry setting somewhere.
I'll do some hunting and see if I can come up with something.
