Windows Update Error 8007370B

Windows 7 Pro x64

My client has been having Windows Update problems for quite a while now, and he finally turned to me when MS tech support told him it was time to reinstall. Originally he was having the 80070002 error, which I was able to get past by fixing a corrupted COMPONENTS\DerivedData\...\ComponentFamilies key.

Now the CBSLog shows a continuously repeated PopulateComponentFamiliesKey Error...Invalid attribute name found: [l:42{21}]"ProcessorArchit*cture"[gle=0x80004005] . I know this is another bit-flip but I can't find it.

ReadinessTool runs forever attempting to install update, SFC give the "could not perform the requested operation" error.

I've attached CBS logs (CBS.zip) , and components (COMPONENTS.zip) containing the current COMPONENTS. I have available a COMPONENTS.BAK (the original from before my first fix), but the size needs to be split to upload it to you...please let me know if you need it!

Thank you! Any help you can give me...very much appreciated!

To find bitflips, you have to use a Hex editor, rather than regedit, since regedit can't cope with anything other than ASII characters
I use HxD for this type of thing.

Having said that - there are considerably more problems here than just a bitflip!
Somehow, part of the SYSTEM hive has gotten hooked into the COMPONENTS hive - and it's so badly corrupted that I can't work out a safe way to remove it easily.
The file appears also to be rather small, at only 19MB rather than the more normal 40MB

I think that unless you can find an uncorrupted copy in System Restore, that you're going to be out of luck, and a repair install is going to be your best shot.

If you want to upload the earlier .bak file - simply upload it compressed to a fileshare site (Dropbox or OneDrive, preferably) and post a link.
