Error 800B0100-Important update categorised as not applicable to PC

    Hi everyone

I am a newbie and I am sure its "not the tool but the mechanic" and is obvious but here goes:

    Issue 1

3 important updates in Windows update reveal error 800B0100. They are KB:2604115, 2729452 and 2898857. They do not install. On PC they are called updates for Windows 7 yet, on-line they are called Windows6.1. Attempt at manual downloading on-line, results in message for KB: 2604115 and 2898857 "updates not applicable for my computer" what???. KB 2604115 starts to install then says 'Not installed". Microsoft Fixit says, prob installing recent updates, error 0x800B0100, and crypto service components are not registered. Have run Update Readiness Tool and Hotfix KB947821. Not resolved.

Curious that they are termed Windows 7 updates on PC in Windows Update yet online they say they are for Windows 6.1. Also statement that KB 2604115 and 2898857 are not applicable to my computer.

Do I need to worry about these or just ignore?

    Issue 2

The Internet Explorer icon just disappeared. Have been IE and Mozilla. I click on IE button in the Start button and a box pops up that says "C:/Program File/Internet Explorer/explorer.exe is not a valid Win32 application". Tried to download internet explorer again but to no avail.

    Thanks everyone for any advice

    Windows Vista(tm) is Windows6.0
    Windows 7(tm) is Windows6.1
    Windows 8(tm) is Windows6.2
    Windows 8.1(tm) is Windows6.?

The version numbers, rather than the trade name reveal which version of the Source Code forms the base for the OS.
This was fine up to Vista, because they weren't similar... and then MS went silly and started TM'ing apparent version numbers

It does get confusing - and I really can't offhand remember what the version number for Windows 8.1 is!

    ....back to your problem.

It's likely caused by corruption in the SoftwareDistribution folder.

There are two ways to attempt to deal with it - the clever way, and the quick way.

One preserves most/all your Windows Update history, while the other trashes it (but updates are still installed) - neither are guaranteed to work.

Your choice - how much of a tearing hurry are you in to get back to what passes for normality?

Let me know and we'll work on it

Error 800B0100-Important update categorised as not applicable to PC

Thanks very much for your trouble. The publishing date of same of the updates are 2012 and it does not appear to have affected performance of my PC yet, so the right approach instead of a quick fix would be preferred. Would it be an option to just reinstall Windows 7? Any help would be a appreciated

Sounds like the problem has been there for quite a while!

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt
    Run the following commands

    NET STOP WUAUSERV
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD
    NET START WUAUSERV

    reboot
then wait 10 minutes, and open Windows Updates, and run a Check for Updates.

Install only the oldest update found - and reboot once installed
then go back to Windows updates and install the others.

Thank you NoelDP. Do I run these commands separately ie) the first line and then enter and do the reboot, the second next line, enter and do the reboot etc, or do I type in each command on a separate line as in your email and then enter and do the reboot? Told you I was a newbie..thank you for your patience.

    Resolved

    Hi there NoelDP,

Yes, the problem has been there for a while, years in fact, but it was my son's PC through high school, which became mine once he left, and which kacked itself. But I am to blame there, hence my concern to get my PC running smoothly. For years the same message has come up that the three updates in question were being installed on shutdown of my PC. I thought that it was something done at the conclusion of every computer session but in this sich they were being installed and failing at the last moment before shutting the PC down, I assume.

A tale follows. My PC is the source of my business and so the solution you gave me was set for implementation next weekend.

Last night, however, 23 updates appeared for download when the PC was shutting down. I followed the process closely. It took some time. On startup again PC seemed to work OK. When starting up this morning I see that those Poltergeist Demon updates from years ago had been updated. My PC is now up to date.

I can only assume that a Windows 7 angel organised a priest to exorcise these Poltergeist Demon updates from goodness knows where, I do not know how this type of world works. These updates have seen the light and are now safely in the bosom of technology heaven. "This computer is KA...LEEN".

I do not understand how or why this has happened as a I am one of the congregation, but whoever is responsible, I thank you very very much.

NoelDB, I see so many people in these forums needing help and people come along and just help, free of charge, understanding the angst that people go through in facing technology which is now inevitably part of our future, we have no choice. Even though I did not try your solution, it took your time. So from me to you and all those other wizards out there, thank you. This is good Karma for you on more than a technology level as part of our human community. Cheers mate. Did ya see that, I just inserted a smiley!!! CU round like a rissole!

I suspect that there's a lot more updates still to come :)

See what Windows Update has to say if you do a manual check for Updates - then look in the History and see if there were any failures recently.
800b0100 errors don't often fix themselves, but it's possible that running the SURT kicked the system into submission :)
