Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 Activation fails

    Hello,
I am currently reinstalling Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 for a friend, and I can't seem to activate it using the COA key found on the underside of the notebook. Upon entering the key I receive a "The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows 7 product key. Please check your product key, and type it again." message. I have already run "legitcheck.hta", and it confirms that this version is genuine.

Apart from that, I am not able to use the often phone activation option, as entering "slui.exe 4" only gets me to the "Windows Activation" screen, with the options "Buy a new product key online", "Type a different product key" and "Contact Microsoft to help resolve this problem".

    Below is the MGAD output.

    Hi, Welcome to SF

1.) Call notebook support and explain the situation to them and they will ask you for some information about the laptop (ie. serial number, model, etc.) and will sometimes provide a new key that will get you activated ( OEM versions are supported by the manufacturer and not MS so they are suppose to be the ones that verify the purchase and provide support to get the system reactivated if there are problems )

    2. If notebook manufacturer will not help then call the MS activation hotline and explain to them that the Software required a reinstall and notebook manufacturer will not help will sometimes get MS to provide help (they will ask for information about the system to ensure you are installing the correct version that came with the system and will want you to give them any info you can still read from the sticker as well as the model and serial number of the laptop etc. )

Normally since you are dealing with a laptop that did come with the OS preinstalled one or the other will provide an activation response code that will activate the system but it does sometimes take a bit of talking with the support staff to get it done.

Legitcheck is of absolutely no use here - the system will ALWAYS show as genuine while in the Grace Period.

    Recreate the Licensing Store
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
    net start sppsvc
    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

    @NoelDP
I did exactly as you told me, however it still claims that the key is invalid.

Thanks everyone for the help, but the solution was the the key was actually invalid: an 8 was partially scratched off and looked JUST like a 3. Sorry for having wasted your time, and thanks for the fast responses!
