    Windows 7 OEM activation


    I put a new SSD into my laptop and did a fresh install of Windows 7. The activation key isn't working, this is because according to Microsoft it is an OEM activation key that Acer used to install Windows and this is blocked. They say that I have to contact Acer to unblock it. Is there any other way around this? I haven't had chance to call Acer just yet because their offices are closed. I suspect they will try to charge me or say they cant unblock it.

    Are you using the product key on the sticker like this?



    What did you use to do the reinstall? A downloaded installer?

    The product key on the sticker has rubbed off so I used a product key extractor tool before changing the hard drives over. That was the key I attempted to use. I used a Microsoft tool to create a usb Windows boot from a downloaded iso.

    That is why it is being rejected, that key is what Acer uses. It is the factory key.

    That's why they put the sticker on individual computers, to be used for your computer only.

    You can see if getting factory recovery discs from Acer are available, they don't normally ask for the key when using them to reinstall.

    It's a shame the key on the sticker is unreadable, if you can't get the recovery discs you may be stuck having to buy a new license.

    Your problem is that for some reason, the system is unable to properly read the SLIC table in the BIOS, which is required to be able to self-activate the OEM_SLP Key with which the computer came installed - and which you have used together with apparently retail media .

    The normal solution is to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker - but you say that you are unable to read the Key there.

    In such circumstances, the only things you can do are

    1) reformat and reinstall using the manufacturer's recovery media
    2) purchase a new license for Windows (or a new computer)


    There *may* be an alternative solution though, if you are patient and persistent.
    Attempt Telephone Activation, and speak to an operator - they will tell you that your current Key is blocked (they should then ask for confirmation of your Product Key). Explain to them your problem, that you need to change the Key to the one on your sticker, but that the sticker is unreadable (could they please supply a replacement Key?). Hopefully they will ask for documentary proof of the sticker, in the form of an email with a picture of the affected sticker - and you can proceed from there.
    Sometimes it takes two or three calls before you get an operator who actually knows and uses this procedure - but I know that it can and does happen.
