Windows 7 - not running genuine Windows 0x8004fe21

This is my son's desktop that he has given to me to fix. I need help, please. It is a HP that came with Vista and included the upgrade to Windows 7 when it was available. It has been fine for a few years, but it is now reporting that "This computer is not running genuine Windows" and it cannot get any Windows updates. The failing hard drive was replaced a couple of years ago and I did not hear of any issues from him afterwards. I have already run CHKDSK and SFC and they did not report any issues. Thank you.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

Looks like that's fixed it - you should no longer be getting notifications.

Yes, Noel. It appears to have done the trick. No longer get the notifications and I can now get the Windows updates. Many thanks. You're a genius!

I rember that yesterday I tried downloading a program and my antivirus blocked some attempts for viruses, making me cancel that download. Later on I discovered some "strange" files that weren't there before on my d: drive. Which I then deleted. I might be files ending with .dll
I also removed IE, since I always use chrome.
I don't know if any of this could have anything to do with the popup of not having a lincensed windows?
