Windows Not Genuine (cannot activate via slui)

    Hi all,

I have had this problem for about 2 weeks now and any help or assistance would be very much appreciated. My Asus laptop running Win 7 Professional (64) started showing the watermark with the Windows Not Genuine message. The laptop is about 2 yrs old. Windows updates have stopped and System restore fails with 'catastrophic failure' error. Also my Office apps have started to freeze with the 'Non commercial use - Unlicensed Product' message in the title bar. Running slui as admin but there is no activation window displayed. I was only able to run MGDiag after going into safe mode. I have tried some of the suggestions in other posts but no luck.

    Thanks again for any assistance.

Unfortunately, MGADiag run in Safe Mode is pretty useless.
There's no significant errors in the current CBS.log - and none in the earlier logs
I didn't find any signs that an SFC scan had been run recently, though??

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data - it'll give us a bit more to work with.

Please post the CheckSUR log after downloading and running a new copy - the result you have is a couple of months old.

    Hi Noel,

I have downloaded and tried to run the CheckSUR (KB947821) but it has been hanging for the past 2 hours. Also
I tried running Windows Updates but it failed with error 8024001F.

Now I am also not able to run SFC with the error that the protection service is not running. I have checked that Windows Modules Installer service is set to Manual and running but still not able to run SFC.

Here is the diagnostic report which i managed to run in normal mode.

    Hmm -
Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

That looks normal enough - surprising in view of your comments!

Lets have a look at the SPPSVC, which is what appears to be broken, as far as Activation is concerned.

Please open an Elevated (Administrator) Command Prompt window and use the following commands....

    net start sppsvc
    sc qc sppsvc
    sc queryex sppsvc
    sc qprivs sppsvc
    sc qsidtype sppsvc
    sc sdshow sppsvc

Copy and paste the output to your reply

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

    Hi Noel,

Well some progress...since I read your comments I tried to reboot my laptop again and now the Not Genuine message has disappeared. But I am not entirely convinced that anything has been fixed and I half expect the watermark to appear again..also the symptoms with Windows Update, System restore and Office are still there.
