    Forced updates?

A few hours ago i noticed a tooltip telling me that Windows will shut down to install updates at some designated time. I didn't install these updates, they installed on their own.

My Windows Update settings have been set to check with me before downloading. I found out that they were reset to download automatically, but how did this happen??

I hate that setting because in the past, I've come across one instance where Windows never rebooted and i had to shut it down even though it told me not to.

There are some things that are force-updated to an extent - but in theory nothing should reset your option settings.

This can happen because of registry corruption, or use of a registry cleaner/optimiser, or because of malware (although malware wouldn't normally attack such a setting, it's possible that a cleanup procedure altered the setting to the default)

If you've ever used HD Tune it can change some w7 system settings, it has changed my power settings for example. I don't remember if it changed my update settings, which are the same as yours.

There are two things i can of, one is a program called Handbrake that i recently installed. It's a video converter tool that required and installed something related to a Microsoft.NET 4 update. I don't know what Microsoft.NET is.

I also installed Movie Maker from the MS website, a package called Microsoft Essentials. The exe came with other junk too like Mail and something else. I was given the option to uncheck Skydrive though.

I have and use Handbrake too, .NET framework has something to do with programming, I think, it's needed for many programs to run properly.

Nice, I was swatting my monitor.
