Validation of Windows 7 problem after updates.

For a while now I have had to deal with a validation problem after some updates. I purchased Windows 7 Pro from a reputable computer shop when I was having a major upgrade and they installed it for me. Everything was great until recently. The problem is that I live in Spain and the guy in the shop does not speak English but he can normally see the problem. I took it to him 3 weeks ago when my screen went black and the message came up saying that my Windows was not genuine. He called the Spanish number although it seemed to be automated, but it cleared the problem for a week. After a Windows update one week ago it happened again so I tried to activate using the key on my disc box but it didnīt work. Sorry but I have to use a "Dummies Book" as I am not too savvy when it comes to PCīs and where to look. After looking at Control Panel/System I discovered that the key on my PC is different to that on the box. I validated using that key and it was back to normal until another Windows update yesterday. Same problem but it took me several attempts to get the validation to work. I am aware that at least one of the updates failed yesterday but I feel reluctant to try again or I shall be in the vicious circle again.

I canīt afford to call technical support in the UK and I donīt understand them in Spain. Can you help please?

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

    https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

    Version & Edition

I have a desktop PC not a laptop and the sticker is still on the back of the DVD cover and says Windows 7 Pro but none of the other letters and number say edition. On the DVD itself in Spanish it says including Service Pack 1. Sorry, I donīt know what I am looking for. I have checked the label with your link and it certainly looks genuine.

I will try and follow the tutorial to produce the report you need. Thanks

Perfect - and there's no obvious problems in the report. it appears to be activated properly anf passed validation on the 9th August.

You shouldn't currently be seeing any notifications - if the background is still black, you can change that by right-clicking on an empty area of the desktop, and selecting Personalize. Then make your choice of what you want for background, etc.

If you do get the notification again, run MGADiag while it's showing - it may even fix the problem - and post the new report the same way you did this one!

This sort of problem may be due to what's called a 'race condition' - often caused by conflicting security software.
What Anti-Virus is installed? what other security software is running? (firewall, anti-malware, etc.)

    Anti-Virus

Thank you so much for having a look and finding all okay.

I think you are on the right track as my antivirus software is very sensitive and updates several times a day. it is ESET Smart Security 6. I also have Tune Up Utilities that keeps the PC running smoothly but not sure they like each other.

Not sure what else but the phone company have some on the internet line and presume Microsoft are making me download theirs all the time. Eset is not happy now as one of the windows updates failed yesterday and it wants me to do it again. Reluctant, as this is when the validation problem starts again. I have looked in the update history and the update that it still wants to do is the one that failed 3 times yesterday and is (KB2976627) apparently for Internet Explorer 11 on W7. What would you advise me to do apart from send another report when I get the validation message again.

I did manage to change my black screen back to normal settings yesterday, thank you.

I would uninstall Tuneup Utilities, personally - I don't like it much (it may also be causing your problems with Windows Update).

    for your updates problem....

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

also, please upload the file C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log

    Donīt Understand - Sorry

I followed the link and downloaded the file for W7 (all 220MB), ran it and it seems to be a hotfix for an unloadable KB file. Anyway I did it and ran the Windows update again and I think it has installed it. I didnīt see anything about CBS persist Files and I canīs find the windows update log info that you need. Sorry, I feel really dim now after thinking I was following this okay.

If you can talk me through exactly how to get to the files and how to get them on here, I would be grateful.

I did take a look in Explorer C:Windows/Logs and could see CBS persist files but not sure if that is what you want and how to upload. I did try the attachments in the tool bar above but the upload failed. Help Please...

" it seems to be a hotfix for an unloadable KB file"...
I need to know the EXACT error message when you tried to run the file - yes, it appears to be an update, but it is in fact a diagnostic program with a repair capability.
It's not infallible, and sometimes the errors are enough to prevent it from even starting, but knowing the error-message alone, can be enough for us to be able to begin fixing the problem.

What we need initially is exactly what's in the tutorial we pointed you at (regardless of success/failure in running the tools) - they can tell us a lot about the system, and allow us to start fixing things.

There is no reason to fell embarrassed about not understanding things - most of the time we hope to be able to ignore the 'understanding', and just get on with the 'doing' bit. Because every user has different experience, we expect to fail sometimes - so all we need is as much detail as you can give when things don't seem to run to plan.
Always - if you can - give exact error messages. If you spot anything strange happening when running any fix, then tell us about it.
Sometimes, even a spelling mistake in an error message can point us to the cause of the problem (believe me, this particular solution was a godsend a few years ago! - it was the only clue we had for a specific problem!!).

Hopefully, the tutorial is detailed enough to get you through - if not, please tell us exactly where you get lost (then I can beat the writer of the tutorial about the head to rewrite it properly! :) )

With enough detail about your problems, we may be able to craft specific diagnostic one-click tools, and one-click fixes, and get your system back to the way it should be.

In short - don't be afraid to ask for explanations, details, or anything else - we are here to help.
