A repair install may be sufficient - but a Clean install should certainly do the trick.
I suspect that with the machine in front of me, I could fix it, but that's a totally different ballgame to attempting to fix it in a forum context.

PLEASE - for your own peace of mind, and the good of your computer - avoid ANYTHING that claims to be a 'registry optimizer/cleaner/fixer/defragger'. All such things are more snake-oil than anything else, and will almost certainly lead to a repeat performance of current problems.

Good luck with it!

Just re-built it

Noel, again many thanks for your help. I bought a new 1 Tbyte drive and just started over. The biggest problem was finding the telco number for verifying the key. Once connected to MS support it only took about 5 minutes to get my key activated. Between Carbonite and files from the old drive it did not take too long to get all running. When I am sure I have all the files on the new drive I will wipe the drive and use it for the swap file. Probably at that point I will remember another file I needed.

I noticed that in my search for the MS phone number I found a lot of comments which reflect your position registry cleaners etc. I use Ccleaner for junk removal and sometimes ran the registry cleaner. That will stop.

One question: as programs are installed and re-installed what keeps the registry from getting clutter with registry entries that are not removed. I have never found one application that when removed (using their removal process) does not leave remnants of the application in the registry and/or programs, files, etc. scattered around the hard drive.

I have used REVO unstaller and that seemed to work. I had not used it prior to the 'Genuine' issue raising it's ugly head.

Again Many thanks.

CCLeaner is one of the safest registry 'cleaners' available - I've been known to use it myself. It has the advantage that it doesn't make any attempt to clear all the errors it finds, but merely the ones that it 'knows' are safe to remove. The problems come when the user over-rides the default options, and mayhem can ensue.
The odd redundant file scattered around the system makes absolutely no difference to performance - and it would take massive registry problems to make any real difference in working use of most systems. Defraggers are almost redundant nowadays - I run a manual defrag about once every 6 months, and never see any real change in performance (but I'm not what I'd class as a heavy user likely to hit problems caused by fragmented drives - they are mostly people doing re/encoding of video/audio).

Revo is very good at what it does - but it still needs a certain amount of caution, since it's my belief that corruption in the registry can cause it to run amok, with nasty consequences.
Most commercial programs have a 'special' cleanup tool , which may or may not be effective in removing the residuals left behind by the built-in uninstaller - AV's particularly need this tool to be run whenever uninstalling, to reduce the chances of interfering with any replacement that may be install (including their own upgrades!)

Glad you seem to be running OK now - Good luck with it!
