Windows 7 not updating to SP1 Window Update failing error code 800736B

I have tried for many months to fix this issue of installing SP1 for Windows 7 64 Bit version and I have continued to have issues. I found this forum and I need help on fixing it.

    I get this error:
Window Update failing error code 800736B3

    Attaching documents.

Thank you for any help you can provide

Hello and welcome Greg now I am assuming you have 7 onboard and have been using it - or is it a new install and you are trying to get SP1 installed?.

If it is the latter then it is easily fixed using this tutorial
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
If you have data on the install then if it isn't too much just back it up and do the tutorial.

Just one thing make sure you only pick the version you have an activation code for as trying to get a higher version installed will end in grief.

The 800736B error usually indicates registry corruption - however, in your case it looks to me like the problem is with the installer for SP1.

Have you tried downloading the standalone installer and running that?
Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Center
    Youll need the windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe file

This isn't a new upgrade. I upgraded years ago from Windows Vista to Windows 7.

I did try to install the standalone installer but to no avail. It still doesn't work. I'm going to try this one more time.

I tried the stand alone installer one more time and I get this error:
    Installation was not successful
    Error: ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_NOT_FOUND(0x800736b3)

In that case, I think your quickest solution is going to be a repair install of Windows.
