kb2538242 says installed successfully, but hasn't

new computer, see profile, Windows 7 professional came installed, but not the updates...so I'm running updates. I see a lot of history in the forums from years 2011 and 2012 about this update loading over and over. What is happening now is different in that the update keeps saying it needs to be installed, I install it, computer says it installed successfully, I reboot. I rerun update search and it finds same update kb2538242 still needs to installed. The difference is that it actually does need to be installed...it does not show in the "view updates" list.

I have tried manually installing, and installing an alternate file I saw in the forums (it no longer exists). I've installed the file probably 20 times. I can't just ignore it because it won't do any of the later updates including those for Office 2010 which I just installed. I can't figure out what to do. Can anyone help? Running IE11, Windows 7 professional

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

    Problem resolved

Woke up in the morning and problem was gone. The last attempt must have worked...have no idea why? Thanks for your willingness to help.
