    Configure windows

I have just tried to shut down my computer for the first time in a while and it says preparing to configure windows please don't shut down computer. This happened before the computer even turned off and it's been stuck for a while now. What do I do?

Hello Kimba, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

    How long is a while?

Sometimes it may seem like the computer is hung, but as long as there is hard drive activity it'll be best to let it sit and finish installing the update(s).

If it's a recent install, and the original installation disk was the original version rather than SP1, then it may be installing the Service Pack - which can take a couple of hours.

Only start worrying if there is no HD activity at all for more than 5 minutes (there is almost certainly an indicator somewhere - check your manuals for details).

I've had 'normal' shutdowns take 15 minutes after a long run - and was about to hit the panic button when suddenly the HD light started flashing again, and the system moved to the next stage.
