Sorry - got sidetracked by work
I will get back to you!

Groucho - it's the results of that tool that we've been working on throughout this thread - I long ago lost track of how many people I've directed to that download

I've uploaded a file - s96ae.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1
REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
COPY %userprofile%\desktop\s96ae\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with any command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming all commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

Unfortunately, that's what we have to expect with this type of repair - each fixed item reveals another layer of problems underneath
These are the ones I'm going to try and fix next if I can - hopefully using the same COMPONENTS file I already have (so expect the errors to jump markedly when I do!)

Let's see how this goes...
I've uploaded a file - s96af.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1
REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
COPY %userprofile%\desktop\s96af\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with any command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming all commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.
Also post the new COMPONENTS hive.

Theat one worked as expected, at least - it's left me with just the one error to fix in the COMPONENTS hive...
Code:
(f) CSI C Mark Deployment Missing 0x00000000 c!31f1661a474..9606a59d3ec_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17970_e7250e19a7fdef64 x86_microsoft-windows-d..lient-dll.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17970_en-us_57a9912a1886b664
I'll deal with that today, and then we'll have a go at things a slightly different way.

Second thoughts....
Let's try the other way first, since it may find and/or fix the problem anyhow...

Please download SFCFix from here... http://www.sysnative.com/niemiro/apps/SFCFix.exe and save it to your desktop (we'll need it later anyhow, I think)

Once saved, double-click on it and accept the warnings. It'll run, and create a file SFCFix.log on the desktop - please upload it to your reply.

Hi Noel,

I ran the sfcfix.exe, then rebooted, cleaned the CBS folder and ran both sfc /scannow and CheckSUR again.

sfc /scannow still bombs out with "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requsted operation."

Logs from sfcfix.exe and checksur attached.

sfcfix summary:
SUMMARY: Some corruptions could not be fixed automatically. Seek advice from helper or sysnative.com.
CBS & SFC total detected corruption count: -2318
CBS & SFC total unimportant corruption count: 0
CBS & SFC total fixed corruption count: 0
SURT total detected corruption count: 38

SURT total fixed corruption count: 36
