How do I prove that my eBay Win 7 DVD is genuine?

My question is the opposite way round from the guys who complain that their Windows is "not genuine".

Windows doesn't complain about my Win 7 - but I want to verify (for the future) that it is genuine.

History: I wanted to downgrade from Win 8 (not 8.1). I bought Win 7 Home Premium for £45 on eBay. Seller had 99.9% positive feedback for 26,000 items. Seller had sold 402 of this item.

I tried to activate Windows, using Control Panel > System

It says "Windows is activated". I saw no option "Change Product Key" (which I can see on my company Win 7 laptop). The Product ID was listed in "System" as an OEM number. This number is not the same as the number inside the battery compartment. And of course it's not the same as supplied by the eBay vendor on the COA tag.

On the Windows Validation site, I clicked "Validate Now". The message said "Your Windows is genuine".

I then noticed that 169 updates were installing themselves.

So, I never entered any Product Code, but I have genuine Windows 7, with access to updates. Before shooting my mouth off, I checked for updates right now, and got 2 important updates.

Maybe I should have bought the £1 eBay offer :)

BTW: I've been installing, re-installing, repair-installing, upgrading, and downgrading Windows since version 3.1. I have never at any time been asked to provide a Product Key.

My problem is that I get 14 days to complain to complain if my eBay Win 7 is not valid. I have 4 days left.

Question: Shall I simply leave well alone? (If it ain't broke - don't try to fix it.) What happens if I need to completely reformat the disk? In that case, the old OEM number that's currently in Control Panel will no longer be there.

sounds like it's an OEM version to be honest, bulk bought version of windows that companies buy to save time on installation. it is genuine but not meant for consumers, more for businesses.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

    https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

"Windows 8" (nothing else - no Pro, Ultimate, etc. That corresponds with what was shown in Control Panel > System before the downgrade to Win7.)

This appears to be perfectly genuine -
    Important details...
    Windows Product Key: *****-*****-QCPVQ-KHRB8-RMV82
This is the Dell OEM_SLP Key for Windows 7 Home Premium
    SLIC DELL QA09
This is an apparently valid SLIC table for Dell.

    HOWEVER...
There are no downgrade rights from Windows 8 (Core edition) to Windows 7 - and Downgrade rights do not include Home Edition anyhow.

The installed Key is ONLY valid when used with the proper manufacturer's Recovery Media - on a machine which originally shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium installed.
The installation is therefore classed as counterfeit - even if it appears as activated and validated.

You should demand a refund from your vendor (with threats of legal action!), as they are selling for profit materials for which they have no rights whatever, and are therefore committing fraud at least.

Thanks for your response. I shall take action immediately.

BTW: Is there ANY Windows 7 that I'm allowed to buy and legally install it on my laptop which was pre-installed with Win 8?

If so, what should I have bought?

I would say just buy a OEM CD from a online retailer like Newegg: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - Operating Systems - Newegg.com

I stay away from operating system software on ebay.

Thanks to NoelDP and HAVOC for responses.

I've emailed the vendor in order to "reserve my rights" within the 14-day returns period.

However, when I re-read NoelDP's post, I get the impression that I'm in the wrong - not the vendor:

There are no downgrade rights from Windows 8 (Core edition) to Windows 7 - and Downgrade rights do not include Home Edition anyhow.

The installed Key is ONLY valid when used with the proper manufacturer's Recovery Media - on a machine which originally shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium installed.
There's no way that the vendor would know what I was planning to do with the product.

(Maybe I should be starting a new post. If so, I can resubmit the post.)

The vendor knew EXACTLY what you were going to be doing - and the sale of these recovery disks is well outside the terms of the License Agreements.

A large chain in the UK (Comet) was sued by MS for £1000000 for doing the same thing a couple of years back...
