    Windows Update error 8008005 on search and update


    Windows Update was working fine until earlier this month, when it suddenly started displaying the mentioned error code.

    Have tried running the FixIt tool from Microsoft to reset Windows Update components, but it cannot repair the Windows Update error.

    Tried running SURT, but it gave a message about not being able to install hotfix.

    SFC /SCANNOW cannot run.

    Have you tried a start up repair from the install disk?

    It's installed from an Windows 7 Ultimate OEM disk. The disk doesn't have SP1. Every time I've tried a repair (using the Upgrade step in the guides) it says my version is newer, so setup won't continue.

    In "desperation" I've downloaded the non-OEM Windows 7 Ultimate iso as well, but that won't work either (as expected). I can do a clean install from the OEM disk of course, but would rather avoid it if possible.

    It would appear that some of your Key files are damaged, i don't think you have much choice

    Yeah, was sort of fearing that. I know the error code usually ends up in a failure with TrustedInstaller and other key system files. Was hoping to find another answer here :P

    Will wait it out a little bit longer, since the system otherwise is working just fine. Have to make sure that I have absolutely everything I want backed up, plus note down a couple of years of tweaks to get everything the way I wanted :-/

    Try this, open a elevated command prompt ( click start, type cmd in the search box, right click on the cmd entry and select run as administrator) in the black box that opens, copy/paste sfc /scannow. If you decide to type it, notice the space between the sfc and the /. It is a system file checker which will scan your system files and attempt to correct any missing or corrupt files. What we want are the results to say windows found no integrity violations. If it says files were found but could not be repaired, close the box, reboot and run it again, after opening the administrative command prompt. You may have to reboot and run it three times for it to repair all system files. If it can't repair them after 3 reboots, let us know.

    Also, please run the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions and upload the file with your next post.

    This all smacks of permissions problems to me - possibly either a required service is not launching properly, or it doesn't have proper access.

    This isn't strictly applicable here - but may give us some relevant detail....


    Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

    Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

    Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

    sfc /scannow gives the result that in the screenshot attached in my first post. I ran the SF diagnostics tool and have attached the zip file to this post.

    The installation is counterfeit - enabled by a hacker's Activation Exploit.
    You need to reformat and reinstall using legitimate media and Key.
