Windows Update error 80080005 - do I need to do a reinstall to fix?
For a while I have had issues with the Microsoft updates in that if I ever tried to initiate a check for updates manually myself "check for updates" it would fail and bring up te above error code 80080005 however the automatic updates worked (I would see an orange coloured icon in the bottom taskbar every other day or so which would alert me to the fact that updates were needed, and if I clicked that they always successfully installed). Also I would sometimes see the laptop installing updates when I shut the laptop down.
Last week I thought I would try and get it fixed once and for all and signed up for a MS account and took advantage of online support service on the MS website. At that point, even though I had the glitch where I couldn't do a manual check for updates, I could see a long list of installed updates. After they had used LogMeIn to take a look at my PC, they spent about 90 minutes doing various things including it seems, removing the list of installed updates from the list and sadly they didnt fix the problem.
I have done a complete scan using their MS virus checking tool, I have run the MS Security Scanner both of which revealed nothing. I have also used the MS Fix It tool for Updates issues and this just hangs for hours. I have also done a Norton Anti Virus scan and this revealed nothing. I have also run the System File Checker in Windows again with no issues revealed. I have also de-fragged my hard drive (just 3% fragmented). I also contacted Norton yesterday and they took a look and seemed to remove some temp files but all they said was that Norton was working fine, my laptop was clean and they didnt have any expertise with Windows updates issues.
I am using an Acer laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) with MS Office 2010 and apart from this issue, my laptop is fine even though it is now 4 years old. There is one other thing, I cant seem to install a newer version of Internet Explorer, I am using IE9 but I cant seem to get 10 or 11 to load.
I am no technical PC wizard and I am also very concerned about doing things which may damage my laptop which is my primary business tool although I had a PC support chap who we've used occasionally come take a look Friday and he was a bit puzzled, said we'd have to remove everything from the laptop and the re-load it back on which sounds like a real pain. He thought that maybe the hard drive was failing.
One other thing, when I tried to do a manual check for updates, if would say "last check for updates 25/6/12" which always puzzled me because the laptop came to life in Mar-10 so wondered whether 25/6/12 was significant. I use Norton 360 Premier Edition on the laptop, having upgraded in early 2014 from Norton Internet Security.
I appreciate any guidance and help which you can give and if you could keep the language as simple as possible.
