microsoft update error Code: 80070246

My computer was running fine. Then I started getting the occasional BSOD, but have been able to restart my computer. I went to run microsoft updates and it tells me an error occurred and gives me the code listed in the title of this tread (Code #80070246).

I followed the instructions on posting a thread. I downloaded and ran the SURT. It seemed to do its thing just fine.

Then I tried to run an sfc scan from an elevated prompt. When I did so i repeatedly got the following message: "windows resource protection could not preform the requested operation"

I have listed the error code and attached the CBS.zip file.

Any help with this issue would be MUCH appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

The CheckSUR report is revealing - you have massive registry corruption, possibly caused by faulty RAM

Before doing anything else, test your RAM with Memtest86++
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
If/when it passes, you'll need to do at least a repair install of the OS- but I think you may be better to do a clean install.

So far I ran memtest with the current RAM configuration I had set up. It immediately found errors. I had to leave and come back 30 minutes later and it found 10's of thousands of errors. So, then I proceeded to remove all the four 8GB sticks (32GB) total. I numbered the cards and ran the first stick in the first slot with 8 passes and no errors.

Questions: should I stop here and boot my system normally with the working stick in the working slot and see if I can repair windows. Or should I continue the memtest with the other 3 sticks of ram in the same slot that I know works. Then, if all sticks work, run the test in each RAM slot with a working stick? This test just takes a LONG time per stick.....

If any stick fails it is usually going to happen in the first pass.
Test the working stick in each slot for one pass.
test the rest of the sticks for one pass in the working slot.

I found that 3 of the 4 sticks are good (1 bad from the very get go) and all 8 RAM slots are working as well. I have NO idea where my windows 7 64 DVD is located. I have my product key, but no clue where the DVD is. Since it is a custom comp/motherboard, I can't just F8 repair. Do I really need to do a total restore or do you think I can get away with a repair. Either way, how do I do it without the DVD? Thanks

Look in the Tutorials for the instructions for a Repair install. They tell you how to download the ISO for the job.

I ran the downloaded extracted and ran the .exe file from the ISO. Windows installer started up great and then as I proceeded through I would get the message in the attached picture. I am guessing this means I have to do a clean install? Are their any other options before going there?

Unfortunately I think you're going to have to do a clean install. :'(
