"Windows is not genuine" error, computer extremely slow and freezes

    Hello,

I could really use some help. Yesterday, I booted up my computer just like any other day, and it took forever to boot up (got stuck at the welcome screen and then at the desktop before the icons and start menu showed up). Within 5 minutes, the computer froze and was completely unresponsive, so I powered it off with the power button. I tried booting up again with the same result.

The third time, I booted up into safe mode and tried a system restore to a point from last Thursday, the last restore point when a critical update was installed. I restarted into regular mode, and it froze again. Since then when I have gone to system restore, all of the system restore points are gone. Also, I have that message that says "this copy of Windows is not genuine - build 7601" in the bottom right corner.

I can boot up into safe mode or safe mode with networking very quickly, but booting into regular mode takes forever (40 minutes to an hour). Then, within 5 minutes, it will become unresponsive.

I've had this computer for two years and bought it directly from Sony, so it is not an illegal version of Windows. This is really frustrating. Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Here is the diagnostic report.

You ran this report while in Safe Mode - which means that it's missing half the data we need.
It sounds to me as if the problem is likely to be with drivers - or a corrupt user profile.

    First things first, though....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC /SCANNOW.

If both pass OK, then it's probably a corrupt profile - while in Safe Mode, create a new User and see if rebooting to that user gives a decent boot.
If so, then we can work from there.

I completed the CHKDSK and sfc scannow. Normal mode is now actually functional and doesn't freeze and become unresponsive. However, it still has the genuine Windows error in the bottom right and some startup programs still crash due to not responding.

At the end of the sfc scan, it gave the message "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.".

    Here is the log file.

The only error found by SPF is the one that would be causing your non-genuine error....

I'll post a fix for that later.

In the meantime, please run the CheckSUR tool and post the resulting CheckSUR log.

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your OneDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

    Also post your Event logs...

    Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
    Save the file as Appevt.evtx
    Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

Booting into regular mode is giving the message "Reinstall Windows. An authorized change was made to Windows. You must reinstall or restore Windows system files to activate." with error code 0xC004F015. After some Windows updates, no programs seem to be crashing after startup anymore, so it does seem like the only remaining error is the non-genuine error.

Here is a zip file with the three requested log files.

There is a problem with the Performance logs...
Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and...

    1. Click Start, expand All Programs, and expand Accessories.
    2. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
    3. At the command prompt, type lodctr /r, and then press ENTER.
You appear to be now running with the Default Key installed - you need to change it for an activatable Key and activate it.

Please de-activate SpyBot's Tea-Timer (if running) and then uninstall Spybot.

You have residuals from AVG and AVAST, and Kaspersky, attempting to run at startup - I would recommend uninstalling ALL for the moment, and running their cleanup utilities before installing MSE as at least a temporary stopgap measure.

Once complete, reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report, and new Event logs.

The logs are a little clearer now, at least - but there are still significant problems starting these services...
    BITS
    p2pimsvc
    Appinfo
    VAIO Care Performance
    HP Network Devices Support
    Energy Server Service
    Peer Networking Identity Manager
    ShellHWDetection

Let's see if we can get Windows showing as genuine now, at least...

    I've uploaded a file - xhvaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
    Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\xhvaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\xhvaa
    or
    DIR E:\xhvaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\xhvaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
    EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

The non-genuine error is no longer there.

When the sfc scan completed, it gave the message "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Here is the new log file

    Great!
SFC is now clear - and there's no more errors in the CBS.log background, either.

Please reboot twice, then post a new set of Event logs, and we'll see if this has improved the problems with the services at all - then we'll have another go at them.
