Windows Update KB2966583 fails, error code 800736B3

    Hi there,

I have a problem with Windows Update - it continually fails to install update KB2966583 (which is about 2.5MB) and brings up error code 800736B3. I have tried the update troubleshooter for Windows, the update readiness tool and hotfix.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Apologies - the CBS file was too big earlier. I've uploaded a smaller version now!

Please don't be impatient - I have real life outside the forums to contend with, as well as about 30 threads to worry about!

The essential problem here appears to surround this error...

I'll have to do some research on it - but
I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

You posted the COMPONENTS.Log file - not the COMPONENTS (no extension) File I requested. The .log file is merely a record of changes and useless for diagnostic purposes.

Here's the link to the actual file.

I may have found where the problem lies - hopefully it's fixed now...

    I've uploaded a file - nnoaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it to your desktop.
Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

    REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
    COPY %userprofile%\desktop\nnoaa\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.

I've followed the instructions, the copy went through. I've rebooted and run the CheckSUR - here's the log. What do I do next?
