The SFC scan showed this...
Code:
 Line 10022: 2014-10-16 01:01:11, Info CSI 000002b6 [SR] Repairing 1 components
Line 10023: 2014-10-16 01:01:11, Info CSI 000002b7 [SR] Beginning Verify and Repair transaction
 Line 10024: 2014-10-16 01:01:11, Info CSI 000002b8 [SR] Repairing corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:72{36}]"\??\C:\Program Files\DVD Maker\en-US"\[l:32{16}]"DVDMaker.exe.mui" from store

... so that problem got fixed in the end

PLease run another CheckSUR and post the log - I want to check that it agrees with SFC that things are fixed.

Good - the other error is also solved.

I may be being optimistic here- but try Windows Update now.

No good news. The updates still will not install. On a lark, I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter, and it says it corrected several errors (Security settings, Service registration, and Problems installing recent updates). It also reported it could not fix Windows error 0x80070057.

Let's try a full repair of Windows Update...
Download the Windows All-in-one repair tool from Windows Repair (All In One)
Run it - but ONLY the Windows Update repair section - and see if that fixes things.

Stand by, we have a development. Before I saw your post, I ran the Windows Repair Tool from Tweaking.com (with clean boot), tried an update, one of the oldest updates that has not installed for more than 30 days, installed. Trying more. Oh, now I see your link is Tweaking.com.

OK, good news, I was able to install all of the problem updates. The only "important" update I have not retried is the
installation of IE11. I am a little gun shy of that one, as it has crashed the system twice. When that happened I could only recover by booting from a rescue disk to the repair mode, and restoring the system from a system image on an external drive. It may install properly now since the update problem seems to be resolved. One other small issue, as mentioned in my post #19, an optional update, KB2670838, Platform for Windows 7 x64, appeared to install, but on restart gave the following error: WindowsCodecs.dll either not designated to run or it contains an error. That remains the same. Not sure if that is anything to worry about. Tonight has been major progress.

Good news, at least!
Have a go at the IE11 update - it shouldn't crash so badly this time (if it crashes at all). Obviously, make backups first!

I tried the IE11 update again with the same results, system crashed on reboot. It will not boot up, I can go to repair mode (F8), but no repairs work, no restore points work, and the system image restore does not work. I have to use a rescue disk to boot to repair mode, then I can use a system image to restore. I have never been able to get IE10 to install either. Unless you have another suggestion, I am happy that we got the other 19 updates installed. I owe you a pint or two for your help.
