Update KB2965031 fails
This is for MSSE. Has been failing for weeks.
MSSE itself is happy.
This is for MSSE. Has been failing for weeks.
MSSE itself is happy.
Probably the easiest solution is to uninstall and reinstall MSSE
What error message to you get when you attempt to install the update?
What other Anti-Virus products have EVER been installed on this build?
No other AV ever installed.
Uninstalled MSSE. Downloaded latest version.
It won't install - err 0x80070643.
This is the same error code given when trying the update.
I have been all over the place looking for help on this error.
Have yet to find a solution that works.I don't recall seeing anywhere that the problem was solved for anybody.
There was a link at MS to fix some dotNET error, but that was no help.
I cannot get help from MS because they say my (100% legal, paid for) product code is not valid for South Africa. And they generated the product code when I activated this copy of Wndows!!
That may explain it.
Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Hardware.aspx
I don't have a COA as this is a built-up system.
MGADiag results:
Found COA sticker on DVD box. Doesn't have the key on it, that is on a separate sticker inside the box.Code:Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0): ----------------------------------------- Windows Validation Data--> Validation Code: 0 Cached Online Validation Code: 0x0 Windows Product Key: *****-*****-TC68K-Y9X7W-RTX62 Windows Product Key Hash: 92PKPLnnHZKNl2/EFIq4NeRErYI= Windows Product ID: 00371-414-0016815-85726 Windows Product ID Type: 5 Windows License Type: Retail Windows OS version: 6.1.7601.2.00010100.1.0.048 ID: {AC528688-0972-4F8C-84E1-09F91F5D93FD}(1) Is Admin: Yes TestCab: 0x0 LegitcheckControl ActiveX: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Product Name: Windows 7 Professional Architecture: 0x00000009 Build lab: 7601.win7sp1_gdr.140303-2144 TTS Error: Validation Diagnostic: Resolution Status: N/A Vista WgaER Data--> ThreatID(s): N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Windows XP Notifications Data--> Cached Result: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 File Exists: No Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 WgaTray.exe Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 WgaLogon.dll Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGA Notifications Data--> Cached Result: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGAExec.exe Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGAAddin.dll Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGA Data--> Office Status: 109 N/A OGA Version: N/A, 0x80070002 Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-364-80041010_025D1FF3-229-80041010_025D1FF3-230-1_025D1FF3-517-80040154_025D1FF3-237-80040154_025D1FF3-238-2_025D1FF3-244-80070002_025D1FF3-258-3 Browser Data--> Proxy settings: N/A User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Win32) Default Browser: C:\PROGS\Internet\Firefox\firefox.exe Download signed ActiveX controls: Prompt Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disabled Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Allowed Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disabled Allow scripting of Internet Explorer Webbrowser control: Disabled Active scripting: Allowed Script ActiveX controls marked as safe for scripting: Allowed File Scan Data--> Other data--> Office Details: <GenuineResults><MachineData><UGUID>{AC528688-0972-4F8C-84E1-09F91F5D93FD}</UGUID><Version>1.9.0027.0</Version><OS>6.1.7601.2.00010100.1.0.048</OS><Architecture>x64</Architecture><PKey>*****-*****-*****-*****-RTX62</PKey><PID>00371-414-0016815-85726</PID><PIDType>5</PIDType><SID>S-1-5-21-3974506467-4031061574-3253491596</SID><SYSTEM><Manufacturer>Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.</Manufacturer><Model>To be filled by O.E.M.</Model></SYSTEM><BIOS><Manufacturer>American Megatrends Inc.</Manufacturer><Version>F7</Version><SMBIOSVersion major="2" minor="7"/><Date>20120723000000.000000+000</Date></BIOS><HWID>2DE73B07018400FE</HWID><UserLCID>1C09</UserLCID><SystemLCID>0409</SystemLCID><TimeZone>South Africa Standard Time(GMT+02:00)</TimeZone><iJoin>0</iJoin><SBID><stat>3</stat><msppid></msppid><name></name><model></model></SBID><OEM/><GANotification/></MachineData><Software><Office><Result>109</Result><Products/><Applications/></Office></Software></GenuineResults> Spsys.log Content: 0x80070002 Licensing Data--> Software licensing service version: 6.1.7601.17514 Name: Windows(R) 7, Professional edition Description: Windows Operating System - Windows(R) 7, RETAIL channel Activation ID: e838d943-63ed-4a0b-9fb1-47152908acc9 Application ID: 55c92734-d682-4d71-983e-d6ec3f16059f Extended PID: 00371-00170-414-001681-00-7177-7601.0000-0662014 Installation ID: 019956494053090704163666266754436670876252597403896431 Processor Certificate URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88338 Machine Certificate URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88339 Use License URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88341 Product Key Certificate URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88340 Partial Product Key: RTX62 License Status: Licensed Remaining Windows rearm count: 4 Trusted time: 02/10/2014 12:35:19 Windows Activation Technologies--> HrOffline: 0x00000000 HrOnline: 0x00000000 HealthStatus: 0x0000000000000000 Event Time Stamp: 9:27:2014 09:48 ActiveX: Registered, Version: 7.1.7600.16395 Admin Service: Registered, Version: 7.1.7600.16395 HealthStatus Bitmask Output: HWID Data--> HWID Hash Current: OAAAAAEAAgABAAEAAQACAAAABQABAAEAln0QSanicu4SwvBYRh/+rDK39AGKOwxWL3/VLffWlmM= OEM Activation 1.0 Data--> N/A OEM Activation 2.0 Data--> BIOS valid for OA 2.0: yes, but no SLIC table Windows marker version: N/A OEMID and OEMTableID Consistent: N/A BIOS Information: ACPI Table Name OEMID Value OEMTableID Value APIC ALASKA A M I FACP ALASKA A M I HPET ALASKA A M I MCFG ALASKA A M I SSDT SataRe SataTabl SSDT SataRe SataTabl SSDT SataRe SataTabl

That all looks perfectly good to me - everything seems to match what you have, and there's no errors in the report.
WIN PRO 7 ENGLISH MEA DVD
The MEA stands for Middle East and Africa - so I know of no reason why MS should think it's not valid, especially as the machine passed validation on the 27th Oct.
Event Time Stamp: 9:27:2014 09:48
The 643 error is notoriously difficult to isolate and fix - and we often have to resort to a repair install.
You say that you've already done one? How long ago? What was the reason for it?
Perhaps we should check that there's no malware present...
Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.
Delete everything it finds
Then download the TDSSKiller from here -
Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller - and run it.
Then
Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)
MBAM found nothing.
CBS log attached.
EDIT: I see that the CBS file was not updated. Is this because TDSSKiller found nothing?

The upload doesn't contain the current CBS.log file

It was Access Denied!
But it last updated at 12:33.
The good news is that the problem is (sort of) solved.
I have successfully installed the latest download version of MSSE.
And it updated the definitions successfully.
Checking for updates showed none needed/available.
The bad news is that I don't really know how I succeeded.
I think the following steps did it.
1. Uninstall MSSE. (I couldn't do it with Revo Uninstaller, but I could with Windows' Add or Remove Programs.) If you Google it, there is a Microsoft download to do it.) Reboot.
2. Delete the Program Files\Microsoft Security Client folder. (Needs a bit of fiddling with permissions.) Reboot.
3. Use CCleaner to clean the registry. Reboot.
I suspect that all I have done is clean up so I can install the latest version of MSSE. I still don't know why it couldn't work through Update. But, for better or worse, the 3 steps above worked for me.
Other users, it is important that MBAM and tdsski8ller showed that I had no infections.
Thanks for the help, NoelDP.
