0x80072ee2 for weeks on some PCs while others on same network are fine

    Hi,

I am having problems with Windows Update on some, but not all, of
the computers on my home network. All are running Windows 7
(combination of Home Premium and Ultimate).

Two of the PC's have not been able connect to Windows Update since the
start of July. Both are connected to the network through Ethernet.

The error code I am getting on both PCs is 0x80072EE2, which indicates
ERROR_INTERNET_TIMEOUT. However, this has been persistent for weeks
on these two PC's, but does not affect other PC's on the same network.

e.g. I have another wired PC that is not experiencing
problems. Two laptops that also run Windows 7 can connect
    wirelessly to Windows Update.

I run a Linux PC as a firewall/NAT/Squid box with my home network
behind it. Squid was enabled relatively recently, so I tried
reverting to a no-Squid configuration (NAT/ufw only) which has been
working correctly for years, but the problem on the 2 PCs persist.

The two PC's with Windows Update problems happened to be in the same room
on the same switch, so I initially suspected networking cable/router/switch
issues. But moving one of the nonworking PC's to another room,
using a different switch and cable, next to a PC that has working
Windows Update. With the PC's side by side, one is able to connect
to Windows Update, one is not. Which seems to me to rule out a
    general networking/routing issue.

The two problem PCs do not otherwise have any apparent issues
accessing the Internet or other networking issues. The only thing
I can identify as a problem is Windows Update.

I've spent many hours over the past few weeks researching the
problem. I've attempted many different suggested fixes, which
I will document at the end of this message, just so some of the more
obvious fixes can be ruled out. None of them helped, so I'm focusing
for now on what seems to be the most promising line of investigation.

Checking WindowsUpdate.log, this section appears to be the likely
    cause:

If I use IE to browse to the URL that seems to be the problem
    https://fe2.update.microsoft.com/v6/...ce/client.asmx, I
get the same "This is a Windows Communication Foundation service.
Metadata publishing for this service is currently disabled" on both
a problem PC and a working PC. The URL is reachable from both.

Both working and non-working systems report the same IP address for
    fe2.update.microsoft.com using nslookup.

For contrast this is the comparable section from WindowsUpdate.log on a
    working system:

    Other things I have tried:

    * All PC's use DHCP clients to assign IP addresess and DNS servers. I
also tried using a static IP address and manually assiging DNS servers. I
    tried both my ISP-specific DNS and Google's 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4
    without any change in behavior.

    * The C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS file on the problem PC
    contains no uncommented entries.

    * I validated my Win 7 license using the Microsoft online tool.

    * I tried resetting Winsock with "netsh winsock reset" in an elevated
command prompt followed by a reboot.

    * No proxy is configured. "netsh winhttp show proxy" returns "Direct
    access <no proxy server>"

    * I have run the Win7 System Readiness Tool, and the Fixit for Windows
    Update (which found no problems)

    * sfc/scannow found no problems

    * I have uninstalled Avast antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials,
and (on one PC) NetNanny, but that did not resolve the problem.

    * I have run scans with SUPERantispyware and Malwarebytes, neither of
    which found anything wrong.

    * I ran the Windows Defender Offline tool from bootable media, which
    found no problems.

    * I searched for rootkits using Sophos Virus Removal Tool.

    * I synced the system time with the Internet time server time.windows.com.

    * Although I do not believe Norton has ever been installed on either
PC, I ran Norton Removal Tool just to cover that base.

    * I reinstalled Windows 7 on top of one of the PC's (so that existing
docs/programs would remain), but that did not help.

    * Versions of %WINDIR%\system32\wuapp.exe are identical (7.6.7600.320)
on both working and non-working PCs.

    * As an alternative to Windows Update, I ran Autopatcher
(Autopatcher.net ? Index page), which downloads fixes from Microsoft, and
that is able to download and install patches.

    * I have deleted/renamed %WINDIR% SoftwareDistribution and catroot2
folders (stopping and restarting wuauserv cryptsvc and bits services
before/after) as per How do I reset Windows Update components?

    * I have run regsvr32 on a bunch of DLL and OCX files suggested in
different threads. Including running the ie8.rereg.zip command file
    found at http://iefaq.info/attachments/133/ie8-rereg.zip

Strangest of all is that this appears to have persisted through a repair install.
The version number for wuapp.exe is one that was only released at the beginning of the month - so should have been reverted during the repair - although I suppose it's possible that the system did manage to update it afterwards.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

    Code:

    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\WUStatusServer
    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\WUServer
    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /S

    .
    post the results

Thanks for the quick response. I ran Autopatcher at some point after the repair install, which probably updated the Windows Update client. Weirdly, Autopatcher doesn't seem to have any problems downloading the Microsoft patches, even though WU itself does.

Two of the registry commands returned no data. The third one did. Results below:

    Code:
    C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\WUStatusServer
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

That all looks normal - as far as I can see (which isn't very far!)

I have no idea whether this will work, but it has to be worth trying...
Download and run this tool - Repair Windows Updates

I've run the Repair Windows Update tool you linked to, and rebooted. No change, still unable to get Windows Updates with the same error code 80072ee2. The WindowsUpdate.log file still shows the problem occurring in the same spot. I've attached WindowsUpdate.log for the attempts following the reboot.

As a followup, it's been over a month without a recurrence of the problem. I still don't know what changed to make the system stable, but since it's not happening anymore, I'm going to mark this one solved. Thanks to NoelDP for the help.

Very odd! - Sorry about not getting back to you.
Glad it appears to be fixed now (just wish I knew if I had anything to do with it )

    Good luck!
