My computer has a pretty small HDD (144GB), and I'm wondering just how much room Windows Updates take up. Is it a significant amount of space, say over 1GB? Should I consider removing updates that I clearly don't need, say, all the updates for Microsoft Office 2010, which I no longer use and have removed from my computer?

Windows 7 will take up 20GB to start with (allowing room for the install) and can expand to 60GB or more, depending on how you manage it.
Office 2010 can take up another 10GB - If you've uninstalled it properly, then you have also uninstalled its updates
NEVER consider uninstalling updates - unless you have VERY good reasons for doing so.
144GB is fairly small by modern standards, but Windows will run happily in that amount of space. The problem may come with the amount of data or programs present. On that size drive, you should try and keep at least 20-25GB free to allow the system to 'breathe' and conduct maintenance tasks properly
