Not Genuine issue (it is) & Windows Update: Service isn't started

    Hi,

My parents PC has run into some issues with genuine advantage (it is genuine - has been running fine for a year or two) and in attempts to fix that i've caused more issues (i know, i know :) ). Please note this is my parents PC, not mine - specs are not per my profile and it might take a while to get back to you at times.

Updates are set to notify, but not install. When i try to "Check for updates" i get the error:

Windows Update cannot current check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart the computer.

I also cannot update AV definitions in MSE.

Needless to say, a restart doesn't resolve. Firewall is TinyWall and has been opened/switched off at times to see if there was a communication block but all looks ok there. Internet connection is also fine.

I assume the Genuine issue is preventing updates, although 'service not started' is a mystery. When i try to "Resolve Online Now" (activation) i get an error running/installing the downloaded file WindowsActivationUpdate.exe:
"Update installation failed. Error information - 0x80072EFD (0)"

I don't know if this is helpful but i've seen it be asked for often enough so i've included it. MGADiag says (removed license/hash):

My parents PC has run into some issues with genuine advantage (it is genuine - has been running fine for a year or two) and in attempts to fix that i've caused more issues (i know, i know :) ).
What problems did your parents' pc have? What have you done to try to fix it?
What errors does the pc have now?

Download and install Windows Repair (All In One)
Run it. Repair everything and boot afterwards. What problems still exists?

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

The problem was the genuine update and the updates. I tried to fix it by stopping and starting the update service and that's about it for memory. I renamed a folder too, software distribution. But put it back. Sorry, i visit once a week so history is sketchy. I used to know more about Windows than i do now, having diversified somewhat to Linux and AmigaDOS.

I'll do as suggested in the prior posts and get back to you (it'll be a few days probably - before i visit again).

    Cheers.

Hi, i tried running the fixit tool but it didn't work after reboot. The Intel drivers DOES appear to have worked. After two reboots i'm installing updates.

    Bloody marvelous.

Thanks again - this is the best Windows 7 help site i've ever come across.

    Cheers.

EDIT. Oops - here's the MSDiag...
