win update is still stuck installing update 6 of 12, 2 hours so far.

Hello. I was not installing, changing or doing any maintenance of any kind on my PC. The only recent change was that Firefox updated to a new version. There was a notice that updates were ready and I was turning my PC off anyway. 1-5 went quickly but I saw it stick on #6. That was two hours ago.

I am unwilling to proceed without advice.

I have also been struggling with a similair issue with a relatives PC with almost no luck. These machines are in the same house and run win7 but are not shared or networked and have seperate ISPs. Is windows just having a bad week? Some kind of attack? I have no idea. The relative's PC is older and wasn't performing well even before it got stuck in update. In fact I ran update on that one in hopes of solving those issues. I believe there are several issues in play there.

At the moment I'm more concerned with how to safely interrupt update on my PC and fix the cause. It has been running flawlessly until now. Thanks.

What common software is installed? Anti-virus? Registry Destroyers Cleaners?
what users are common to both machines?
What are the KB numbers of the affected updates?

Pleasefollow the WindowsUpdate Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MBcompressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file isbelow the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (theforum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Ok. Thanks. Some of what you ask for could be a problem; my PC is still installing update #6 (for 3+ hours) and I'm leaving it be until told otherwise, including *exactly* how to get off the screen that says "please do not turn off or unplug your machine." As such I cant exactly download and run anything with it...plus its not like anything i tried on the other PC did anything unless it made things worse when it was stuck in update.

Meanwhile the relative's machine eventually goes to desktop now but is even less usable than before running updater AND shows no internet access.

Here is what I can tell you at the moment:

On my PC:
I am the sole user. It links wirelessly to my comcast router to cable internet @50mb/sec. I run Zonealarm free firewall+AV (last years), Firefox(just updated) with Win7Pro. Windows is set to automatically download and installs when I shut down. Its seemed to update several times a week for the past few months. I cannot give you update details or anything else as long as it is stuck on that screen. I'm loath to force a restart without *specific* direction as it didn't go well on the other machine though I don't know how much of that was update or other problems.

The Relative's PC:
My elderly relative is the sole user. I'm fairly sure they would throw it out the window if any porn ever came on screen. I doubt they would fall for an email extention but maybe a poisen link on a site they trust. It's an older custom PC, possibly runs ddr2...has an Athlon 2, 64 If I recall. It is not on the cable routers network and is linked directly via eathernet to the ancient 3meg dsl my relative will not give up. While it is showing the desktop i will be surprised if it responds. It had reached desktop an hour ago but locked up after I tried right clicking the (no)network icon. Only a hard reset got it to reboot and that was the best it was all day.
EDIT: I did try ccleaner on their PC, which cleared about 2.5 gigs of temperary files and then I ran it on the registry...without much effect I might add. It was then I tried installing the updates, and it was after that it locked up for two days.

By the way, I am posting here from my Kindle.

If the update is still stuck, you may as well crash the install by holding in the power button for 6 seconds - rebooting to Safe Mode may then allow the installation to complete, or Startup Repair may give the option to use System Restore to go back before the updates.

OK. Thanks. I've had a busy few days. That seemed to do it for my PC though I'll still download and scan.

As for the Relative's PC, I found it will boot into safe mode without networking but not with command prompt. It goes int safe mode with networking but only shows a black screen, curser and the words "safe mode". Otherwise its as unresponsive as the desktop in normal mode. At least I can thumb-drive the programs over from my PC now. (BtW, i havent thumbed anything between the PCs in over a year, so its not a possible cause of infection here.)

I ran both a memory and disk check, both passed. I also merged the registry backup I made before messing with it. Now it goes into normal mode and if I wait long enough will let me shut it down in the start menu...

Anyway, I will be following your directions this weekend now that I can.
