Windows Activation alert "not running genuine Windows" (0x8004fe21)

First off, thanks for reading my post.

Second, apologies if the answer already exists on the forum. I've searched the forum for related posts for this issue & code, I got about 400 hits. I went through about a dozen with no luck (plus other non-sevenforums Google searches), so I'm posting.

My computer description is in my profile: self-built in 2011, running Win7 Pro 64 (OEM, purchased on Newegg, quite confident it is legit). Until a few days ago, I had no issues with Windows Activation. I believe it was on Dec 10 that Windows Update picked up several updates, apparently for Office 2007. After that update, I began receiving the alert that my computer was not running genuine Windows with the error code 0x8004fe21. See attached screenshot. Yet under the System panel, it shows as activated.

I have tried several fixes so far, none have been successful in resolving the issue:

    1. I uninstalled the Windows updates I received around Dec 10.
    2. I uninstalled an old copy of Office (pre-2007). I use LibreOffice.
    3. Based on several recommendations on this site & others, I updated the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver to the most recent posted on the Asus site for my mobo (V10.5.0.1026).
    4. I've repeatedly tried the "Resolve online now" link to the /genuine/validate site on microsoft.com. On IE11, it tells me the browser isn't configured to run the required script and asks me to download legitcheck.hta. I never use IE, so I went to my default Firefox where the page validates interminably--I've let it run for several hours with no progress.

The other solutions I've read have so far not applied to me.

Below is the MGADiag output. I appreciate any help/suggestions on how to fix this alert.

    Try this...
    What AV are you using?
Please disable real-time scanning/protection and reboot

If the notification has disappeared, re-enable real-time scanning and reboot again

If the notification is still present, first check whether the real-time scanning is still switched off If so, then re-enable it and post the result. If it's turned itself back on then tell me or try again using a different disable option.

    Post back with the results

    Thanks for the quick response.

My AV is Avast. I followed your instructions:

    1. Disabled all shields permanently & rebooted.
    2. Waited 10min. No notification.
    3. Re-enabled all shields. Rebooted.
    4. It has been 10min since that reboot and the notification has NOT yet returned.

Early indication looks promising. I should have thought about disabling my AV when the /validate site just spun & spun. Ugh. I take it this is a fairly common issue with Windows Validation & real-time protection?

I'm going to give it a while longer, then will mark = solved (hopefully).

    Much thanks!

This is a new problem which has surfaced since the released of a botched patch by MS last week - the uninstall of the patch leads to a situation where Avast gets in the way of the system resetting the licensing tokens, and results in a spurious non-genuine report.

    Noel -

Thanks for the explanation. Unfortunately this morning the same activation alert reared its head. I tried disabling the shields and running the validate, but it still cycled for 10min. I don't want to follow the disable, reboot, re-enable, reboot process everytime I turn on my computer. Should I restore the updates I removed (didn't see any option under Windows Update)?

MS pulled the botched update a few days ago so you should be good to run updates again

Pauly, when I check for updates I have no important updates to apply. There are 7 optional, but they are all dated well before this month--e.g. a RDP update, or related to the mouse driver.

PLease run a new MGADiag report - the output may be different now - and post the results.
