    Continuous Failed Updates.

Greetings. I've been introduced to this site by someone who has knowledge about these things and tried to help me, but we've run out of options. Please bare with me as I let you know what I have done so far. So here goes:

I noticed I'm having failed Windows updates and everything I've learned is that maybe I have to choose the upgrade option on Windows. When it asks me: Which kind of installation do you want? screen, click Upgrade. Will this erase my hard drive from scratch?

I guess I have another question too. I receive a "0x80070490" error code when you I Windows Update. I'm assuming I have to try the aforementioned method as I tried Microsoft's other 3 methods on their support site. I just wanted to know if there was another way as well.

When you ran sfc /scannow, I take it that it found corruption that it couldn't repair?
    - Actually it said that it didn't find anything, which I found odd.

That is, Windows Resource did not find any integrity violations.

Updates that are failing: Security Update for Windows 7 for x64- based Systems (KB3003743, KB3011780, KB2992611, KB2984972)

So it's four updates failing? Hm. See if you can get anything out of this: Fix Windows Update Error messages and other Windows Update issues
-Tried everything there too. Even went this route, but didn't have any of the errors mentioned like this guy: Nothing found for 2011 05 06 How-to -installation

    Give this a shot.

    In an administrator command prompt:

    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
    net stop cryptsvc
    rd /s /q %windir%\System32\catroot2
    rd /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
    net start wuauserv
    net start bits
    net start cryptsvc

Then reboot and run the System Update Readiness Tool.
after rebooting and running the system readiness tool (assuming the tool didn't come back with some problem) try and run the update again.
-Hey man, unfortunately this did not seem to do the trick either. They're still failing...

Try and see if installing this works: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=44354

EDIT: I notice that the 4 failing updates are actually related to two components. Out of curiosity, do you use Remote Desktop?
    - I just tried installing each one individually and each one failed. Not sure how to check the event log, but the same error showed up for each one. In fact, as I was typing this, I got the blue screen of death and my laptop shut down. Not sure if that was related too...

Okay, these next few suggestions I'm going to give are more of guesses than anything, but...

First temporarily disable any third-party (ie. not Windows Defender) antivirus. (I've never seen these interfere with Windows Update, but just to cover bases...)

In an administrator command prompt, run:

    net stop TermService

This will stop the main RDP service.

Then try to run an update. Regardless of whether it succeeds or not, you can then re-enable the antivirus and run:

    net start TermService

To return to the earlier state.

Let me know if this works. If not, there's another trick I can have you try.
-Even though I don't run any other antivirus I tried this...to no avail

    Okay let's try this:

    -Right-click Computer > Properties
-Select Remote Settings from the left pane
-Under Remote Desktop, change the setting to Allow from Computers running any version (if it's already selected for that, then change it to the other Allow setting)
    -Reboot
    -Run an sfc scan
-Run a new check for updates, and attempt to install them
-Return the Remote Desktop setting to what it was prior, if you wish

If the updates still don't work, there's one more thing I can have you try before I have to refer you to sevenforums where they're better at reading through log files for this stuff.
    -^ still the same scenario

    Okay. Last try.

Go to Control Panel > Programs > View instaled updates

    Find KB2984972 and uninstall it.

    Reboot

Run a new check for updates and attempt install

If this doesn't work, try and use System Restore to go to a point before those updates appeared an try again.

If *that* doesn't work, I refer you to sevenforums (link) where they have really good log file detectives to sort stuff like this out, if you want to ask there.

If you end up just trying the solution you asked about originally (a repair install), here's everything you need to know about it: Repair Install
-Hey, I don't have this KB installed..

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

    CheckSUR shows the following problem..
    Code:
    Unavailable repair files:
     servicing\packages\Package_for_KB2982378_SP1~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0.mum
     servicing\packages\Package_for_KB2982378_SP1~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0.cat
    SFC is apparently clear

I'll post a fix protocol later.

    I've uploaded a file - wisaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
    Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder wisaa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be one folder inside it (Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

Hi, I only have the Packages file when I extracted everything..

That's OK - it's all you should have (I was in a hurry and forgot to edit the unnecessary bits out - now done )

Good - That fixed the error there.
What happens if you do a new Check for Updates and attempt to install the oldest update found?
