    Cannot activate Windows

I recently installed a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 motherboard, replacing a MSI NF980-G65 mobo, and got the notification to activate Windows (I had installed the NF980-G65 mobo 4 years ago with no activation problems).

However, selecting the Activate now line in the Control Panel\System box just started SLUI but nothing else happened.

I got several automated boxes at various times saying Activate now but when I entered my Product Key I'd get the error that 'The activation server determined that the specified product key could not be used. Error 0C004C008'. I also tried selecting Activate via telephone but the only phone number that appeared was '+971 4 391 7000. The other two selections were blank. Of course, the +971 number was invalid.

I went online to MS Chat and the tech determined that I had some corrupt files after trying to connect remotely and being rejected by my PC. They had me issue: SLMGR /DLV, SLMGR /CPKY, SLMGR /UPK, AND SLMGR /REARM, which apparently erased my product key.

They then had me download an ISO file so I could 'Upgrade' my PC, figuring that would un-corrupt my files. After running all night and after installing 200+ missing Windows updates, I get to the System box in the Control Panel and select 'Activate Windows Now'. Again, SLUI runs but nothing happens but it gives me two more days to activate.

I ran MGADiag and have posted the results:

    Hello rzn,

Since it was activated on the old motherboard, activation is thinking that you are trying to also activate it on the new motherboard as well.

You should be able to activate by phone instead though. :)

Attachment 344330I've tried that. The techs and I have tried that. Everytime I (we) try to exec SLUI 4, either from the command line or from the run command, SLUI starts but nothing appears on the screen. The only other time the phone menu came up, and invalid phone number appeared (see attached). Can't use the phone system without the numbers in step two of the instructions.

At a loss to what's happened. Is the 888-725-1047 a valid number to call?

If you selected "United States" for your nearest location, then I'm surprised that you didn't get a toll-free number.

The 1-888-725-1047 phone number is valid toll-free number for you to use from within the USA.

Trouble is I never get the prompt to call a number outside of the screen above. M/S techs think my ID is corrupted and want me to do a clean install. They had me delete my product key and sent me an ISO file to do an upgrade hoping the files would over-write any corrupted files but I still can't activate after all that. I even created a new ID with admin rights but that didn't work either, so the issue must be somewhere in the files that are used for the desktops common to all IDs created.

Looks like I have to reinstall.

Odd. The first screen you should see is to select your nearest location, then the one you posted above with phone numbers for the location you selected previously.

I've tried everything. I thought there might be something in the registry but I can't find anything. Even the error code of 0C004C008, which means that Microsoft thinks I've tried to authenticate more than 10 times before it locks you out, would be able to have been reset by the techs but they couldn't do anything about it. I guess I'll transfer my files to an external drive and reinstall.

    Let's try another approach...
This may identify problems and allow us to get you back on track again...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)
