Who did the refurb job? - because from the looks of it, it was NOT Dell.

The most probable explanation here is that the install is counterfeit - enabled by a hacker's Activation Exploit which has since broken down.

Is there a refurbishers' COA sticker on the case? Is the original COA sticker still on the case?

Does the Refurbisher's COA sticker have the full Product Key on it? if so, then you need to reformat and reinstall using genuine media and that Key.

The refurb was done by a Microsoft certified refurbisher according to the ebay item sale page. Over the last couple of years I have purchased about a dozen of these for friends who didn't need a full priced new machine, with no problems yet.

I am doing this for my uncle remotely, so I am pretty sure there is a key on the box, but he doesn't know what to look for. I would be able to post back later today about it because I am going to go get the machine today.
