I'm not seeing the warning now - but when I first sat down after booting up this morning I did see a fading message about 'Windows activation was successful'. That's before I touched the computer today.

Do you have a recommendation for AV other than Comodo and Avast? What should I be using?

It all depends on how you tend to use the Internet.
For most people, MSE is good enough - for those who make a habit of going to the murkier areas of the internet then you need something more resilient and forceful.
There is very rarely a need to use anything other than the built-in Windows Firewall as firewall.

MSE and Windows Firewall should probably be fine then - but if I wanted the next level of protection, what should I install?

Probably the paid versions of either Malwarebytes Anti-malware, or SuerAntiSpayware come next (on top of MSE and the Windows Firewall)

Thanks very much - I'll remove Comodo and set up the Windows/MS tools, and maybe get one of the others you mentioned too.
