    Another Window Genuine error 0x8004FE21

    Hi,

The dreaded Windows Genuine error started popping up on my PC over Christmas. Been ignoring it for a while as I found a few posts suggesting Windows Update KB 3004394 had broken things and MS would eventually fix it.

Still popping up and I'm reasonably sure of my PC, purchased as refurbished from registered supplier.

So, my MGA report is below.

    Chris.

Just checked my result against rg2014 and they look the same. Can I assume KB3024777 will solve it?

If KB3004394 is installed either uninstalling it, or installing KB3024777 should work (4777 will uninstall 4394 - it may also do some cleanup).

Once complete, post another MGADiag report - there may still be a little work to do.

Oh, well I tried installing x64 version (as I'm running 64bit Win 7 Pro) and it failed?

Try uninstalling KB3004394 - if that also fails...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Just checking that the 3024777 file I should use for Win 7 Pro 64bit is KB3024777-amd64.exe. Is this an AMD specific file or am I just being misled by the name? I have twin Intel Xeon E5410 under the hood.

Just to be sure, I re-booted before doing anything more and got an "Installing Update 1 of 1" message on close-down for a minute or so. I re-started and checked Windows Updates - 3004394 is still there and no other updates are dated after 11/Dec/14, so I don't know what it was installing.

Re-downloaded, saved then started KB3024777-amd64.exe, but no activity at all on Task Manager - it was as if it didn't do anything - and no change to Updates list. Tried this twice. Final re-boot but no Updates installed this time.

If I've used the correct file, I'll go ahead and try an uninstall.

BTW What happens if you follow the MS instructions and try to "Resolve Now" - do they talk you through this or just charge you again?? Personally I'd rather take it as a learning opportunity with thanks to all on here so willing to help.

That file should be the right one - the 'amd' refers to the architecture, rather than the manufacture. The other 64-bit option is the IA64, for the Itanium processors.

The resolve now button usually just takes you to validation, which almost always fails to diagnose anything, and then tries to sell you a new Windows license.
