Updates may be working after all

Neal, Another poster (NeilJin) urged me to let updates play out even for 24 or more hours.

I am at ropes end so decided to set it in motion last evening about 4pm.

This morning at 6am I checked and found 241 updates downloaded and install was in progress. However I got my first LOW MEMORY message ever on this laptop. It has 4GB installed.

I exited anything I could at that time and changed settings so Programs get priority, doubled checked my Virtual Memory settings (4094) and turned off eye candy to reduce memory use as much as possible.

It was on #214 of 241 at that time. I checked back about 9AM and it was still on #214 !! Hung out to dry on this one update! I shut down (I know - not a good idea) and went to Safe mode which promptly reverted all updates.

I then booted to Windows normally and restarted the update process. It is going okay I think as it is already on #141 of 241 and only an hour into it since 9am.

Note that about 30 updates did show Successful before I shut down. I would think those do not need to be reinstalled but I don't know how Windows views these or if it leaves them alone.

So I suggest you suspend activities on my case. Since updates are in progress the issue we were working on has gone away - though they have not completed at least they are downloaded and installs are in progress. Just wanted to make sure you don't put any more time into deciphering the logs.

Thank you very much for your efforts to date, your advice and patience. Please know you really helped as I was at my wit's end what to do next other than a clean install - which may or may not still happen depending on update completion and performance afterward.

Thanks to other sevenforum members who have assisted, inquired or offered suggestions as well.

So good to know the community is there for you when needed.

How many updates installed? How many failed? - Have you tried another Check for updates and install session?

Oh no, updates have installed, but when rebooted this message, "Windows cannot configure. changes will be reverted" has come up multiple times. I had it set to auto-update the first two times until a dim light came on in my head. So it ran out of memory before completion both times but it finally dawned on me to not go auto. install.

I then set it to download and let me install. From the 200+ I picked 107 based on your list of preferred update sequence. They did install but on reboot I got the message above...windows cannot configure. changes will be reverted. Then it appeared to revert updates.

When I look though I see several did install as successful but the majority said fail. I cannot look right now as the laptop is in the middle of installing 188 updates though upon reboot it may puke them up again.

P.S. I apologize for calling you Neal so many times. I misread your name...sorry, NOEL!! :-)

In another forum I found many have had this problem AND you, NOELDP, helped resolve their problem by identifying KB2647753 that would help resolve their problem and some said it did. You must own a white hat my friend! :-) (good guy)

The 188 updates finally installed. This time, upon completion, the laptop shutdown instead of rebooting. I powered up and after a while the message Windows configuring went up to 7% before the "Failure Configuring Windows Updates. Changes will be reverted" message appeared again! I have had it with this Sisyphean B.S. - it takes up to 4 hours to get updates identified and downloaded, then the installation part takes another hour depending on quantity. After all, the same result - FAILURE and reversion of changes.

Looking in on installed history: Says No Important Updates available. Looking into update history: NONE INSTALLED today 11/1.
On 10/31 the only ones successful were MS Office (I install Outlook 2010 - wish I hadn't now) and dotNET security updates.
same for 10/30 - dotNET and MSOffice updates successful, rest failed.

If it weren't for this forum and good people like yourself I suspect MS would lose more customers and have a broader negative reputation.

I will be doing a clean install later in the week to start fresh. If there are severe problems then, I am thinking of shopping Apple - after 35 years of Microsoft! Thank you once again for your assistance and interest.

NoelDP,

Just a final note to say thank you for your support during the recent fiasco with the Sony VAIO laptop and Win 7.

The resolution of doing a clean install with a new copy of Win 7 Pro did the trick. All is well, updates are happening normally and the laptop is back in service. In fact, it is performing better than ever now.

You and the others do a great service to users as they have not many resources available to tackle serious problems.
