Windows 7: Security Updates not installing.

Unfortunately the notebook came with Windows 7 installed by the manufacturer (HP). All I have is the recovery disks I had to burn when the notebook was new. I understand that doing a recovery install means selecting 'Upgrade' and I do not know if the recovery disks have this option.
What if I just ignore the offending update and carry on without it? Or is there any other straightforward alternative to rid the notebook of corrupt files so that the update will install? You will know from my earlier messages that I can make no claim to being very computer savvy.

I have just run scf /scannow which reported "Windows did not find any Integrity violations". Hope this helps.

There are at least 4 updates directly affected by the errors present - and unless corrected, they are likely to prevent any further updates being installed, as well.
Since Windows 7 is now in Extended support, only security updates are being released - so it's important to get these installed!

I'll work on a fix protocol for you, since the recovery media can't be used for a repair install, and MS have blocked the open access to legitimate downloads that was available until recently which could be used instead.

Hmmm - looking at the detail of the files required, it's apparent that the damage may be more widespread than I thought.
The good news is that the problem may actually lie in the registry rather than the files - please post your COMPONENTS hive...

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

Hello NoelDP,

I show below the OneDrive link to 'components'. Please do not be surprised if I have fouled up as I have not created a shared link before. Also, I found a COMPONENTS file that was only 1kb whereas the 'components' file, which I hope I have shared, is 57 mb when uncompressed, so have assumed this is the one you would like to view. There are also a couple of 'components log' files that I have not included. If I have not done the linking correctly, or I have sent the wrong files, please do not hesitate to tell me. I will be only too happy to correct my errors.
