Windows 7: Question on failed windows update

Question on failed windows update

I recently got a Windows Update notification in my system tray. It contained a summary list of my windows updates and all were successful except one (KB 2862973) which failed and several that were cancelled. I cannot recall this type of notification ever occurring before.

They all were listed as important, so I am concerned that there could be issues and wonder if I should attempt some kind of remedy?

Can someone advise me on how I can rectify or attempt a reinstall of the failed and cancelled updates; or should I just ignore them?

Frank

You may have to go in and delete the windows update catalog files which basically detect what updates are installed and what ones need to be installed if there are updates as you mention. Doing this may help windows re asses itself so to speak and determine what updates if any may not be applicable to your system. Ive had the same issue in the past where even though windows update downloads a update(s); it ended up being something that was not applicable to my system. So give that a shot and see what happens.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Question on failed windows update

Thank you Matt and Noel. I am now into uncharted territory and unfamiliar with some of the things you mention in your responses. To this point in my pc knowledge base I have only installed the updates and gave no further thought to "what ifs". I did go to the Windows Update Posting Instructions site and the microsoft site Noel mentioned. I downloaded the microsoft tool and copied the CBS folder and then zipped it for attachment to this post.

I am sure there must be a way to revisit the update list, but I do not know how to view the list of updates that showed the failed and cancelled updates. Can you help me there? I do not recall that it contained error messages, but I could be wrong. Nor do I recall ever getting an error message or code when an update failed to install?

Please upload your C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file - it will give us a lot of useful data.
You don't appear to have run either of the scans I requested via the link I gave you?

I downloaded and ran the Microsoft Update Standalone and it did install updates - were there other scans that I overlooked?
My apologies for attaching the wrong log. Will try again. And I appreciate your patience and assistance.

I can see that you've now run the CheckSUR tool - KB947821 - please post the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file

Question on failed windows updat

Noel,

Did not find C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file. However there is a cbs.bld and a CBS.log. I will attach the CBS.log and hope that is the appropriate one?

It sounds very much as if either the CheckSUR tool failed to run at all, or was never run.
Please refer back to the Posting Instructions and run through them again - we really need that log!

I ran the downloaded and installed the CheckSUR tool again and this time I was able to find the files CheckSUR.log. There is also a CheckSUR.persist.log. Hopefully this is what you need.
