Here we go....

I've uploaded a file - lryad.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\lryad
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\lryad
or
DIR E:\lryad

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\lryad <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

I have printed and read through your instructions. Would you mind giving me steps on how to change the target to C:\. Do I just copy and past into C:\, or do I have to right click on the folder and do something there?

Also, since I have had these problems with this computer, when I try to get into safe mode using F8, computer doesn't go straight into safe mode. First of all a screen comes up saying "Please Select Device: Then I have three to chose from i.e. SATA, CDROM and USB. I select "SATA" and enter, and then I tap F8 again. All weird but at least I can get to "Repair" now - I just don't know why this has changed.

Thank you once again

The file should be up there - it shows for me?

The boot options menu sounds as if something changed in the BIOS settings - probably nothing to worry about.

Sorry to take so long. I am having problems. I typed in: DIR C:/lryad and all good ... a whole stack of files showed up, then when I typed in:

XCOPY C:\lryad C:\windows\winsxs/y/i/s/v/h (typed it here, to make sure I'm doing it correctly), it said:

Access denied Unable to create Directory.C:\windows\winsxs

I tried different things, without spaces, with spaces and this is the one that sort of at least found something.

I guess I must be doing something wrong. What do you reckon? Thanks in advance!

You need to make sure you get the spacing right..

XCOPY<space>C:\lryad<space>C:\windows\winsxs<space>/y<space>/i<space>/s<space>/v<space>/h

I have done exactly with the spaces in the correct place this time, and I'm still getting the same result as before - Access Denied
Unable to Create Directory C:\windows\winsxs. I tried three times but still the same - I am really sorry

Don't worry - it may not be your fault...

Back in normal Windows...
Open an Elevated Command Prompt and run the following commands...

ICACLS C:\Windows\winsxs
ATTRIB C:\Windows\winsxs

post the results...

Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
