At least the known problems are now solved - so it looks as if there are other problems to be found and cured.
The problem is that it could be a long process.
Your system appears to be a Dell - which means that there may be an option to do a partial restore (a repair install) if you have the original recovery disks.
The options for repair install using other media are limited, since MS closed down their Digital River servers in February.

If you're prepared for a possibly long and complex attempt at a repair, then I'm happy to be go for it - but it would almost certainly be quicker and easier to do either a repair install or a clean install.

Appreciate the help and advice. I did get a Windows 7 disk from Dell right after I bought the laptop, so that is an option. If it's something not too involved, then I willing to try it.

The reason I say this is that I've been suspecting that the new hard drive I installed in December may be defective, as it has been making random and periodic "clunking" noises, though two different HD diagnostic programs show no obvious issues. On a Western Digital Support Forum, we eliminated any other causes for the noise besides a possible defect. If the fix you're suggesting is too involved, I may just may forgo any more "fixes, return the drive to Amazon, get a replacement and start over again.

I'll go along with whatever you think is best and easiest for both of us.

Which disk diagnostics have you used?

I used Western Digital DLG v1.27 diagnostic as the Hd is a Western Digital 500 GB WD Black SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache. I also used Crystal Disk Diagnostics v 5.6.2. The drive passed all tests. However, it continues to make periodic clunking ot loud tapping sounds that I know from experience are not normal operating sounds. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when it happens either; sometimes when I first turn on the computer and other times it will happen late in the evening ater the computer has been on all day.

If it will be of any help, here's the Western Digital test results followed by the Crystal Disk Diagnostic

HD's should certainly not ever make any discernible noise - if you're sure that it's the HD, and not the CD/DVD drive, then yes, you should return it for replacement.
