You may have some permissions problems...
    Code:
Admin Service: Not Registered - 0x80070005
    - but that can wait because of the other problem...

The installed Key is the Default Key - which can never be activated.

You need to install the proper Key and activate that.

Ok, like usual Im waiting on the client to call Best Buy to get the proper key. Hopefully Best Buy doesn't put illegal copies on systems.

Yes, I am having major permission problems. I can't run slui.exe or change the product key whatsoever (it shows Not available instead of the link to change the key). Am I looking at a repair install or is there a way to reset permissions to default for admins?

What I would do because at this point you don't really know what kind of mess you got.

I would save data and do a Clean Install using the proper COA key or you will be chasing little killer problems for ever.

Original COA is Home Premium so Im really suspicious as to why Best Buy would put Professional on there. They don't seem like the type of people to need or care about having professional.

I do have the data backed up from when I believed the HD to be the problem. Thanks for your input.

Certainly, unless they have very good reason, no-one should ever install anything other than the original version (going by the COA sticker) on any PC.

I know of a number of people who've 'upgraded' their machine to a higher edition using the appropriate OEM_SLP Key - and most of them ended with tears.

Thanks for the help, I ended up reinstalling with COA sticker and I'm updating drivers and getting updates as we speak. The actual story was she got it at Sams Club and reinstalled some time ago but after that I didn't get much detail. I told her the only way to get a stable PC is to reinstall with proper license. All is well now.

    Again, thanks Noel/Jack

    Your very Welcome Gator.

I would suggest that when fixing someone else's computer you will never get the complete story.

Just backup data and do a proper Clean Install will save you a lot of head aches and time.
