How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

This is method I been using for about 10 years:

1. Get a BlacX:
BlacX - Newegg.com

2. Yank HD from box, connect BlacX to another computer, use Disk Mangler (manager) to format disk.

3. Put back in original box

Also good for stubborn SSDs ..... had two instances where SSDs that wouldn't take an install when formatted in box, that once done via BlacX, worked just fine. I dunno why it works ... it just does :) .

By the way .... anyone have a source or know exactly what's in the July a August Updates for Windows 7 for (KB3172605 and KB3179573)

For June, they listed all the KB's included in the rollup, and was able to verify what each one was before installing the rollup. Now that they have supposedly stopped the Win10 stuff, I can't help but wonder if they gonna try and sneak some telemetering or other nasty in a rollup.

Appears so. Have yet to see definitive word about MS uninstalling the GWX app and its machinery (KB3035583) though.

As concerns a fresh install of Win7 SP1, here's my list of Telemetry updates to HIDE (edited from Brds7t7 posts)

KB2952664 Compatibility update for Windows 7 SP1 only (for Windows 7 RTM: KB2977759)
KB3021917 Update to Windows 7 SP1 for performance improvements
KB3022345 Update for customer experience diagnostic telemetry [shows if KB3068708 is Hidden]
KB3068708 Update for customer experience diagnostic telemetry (replaces KB3022345)
KB3075249 Update that adds telemetry points to UAC in Windows 7
KB3080149 Update for customer experience diagnostic telemetry

However, another irritation has appeared in recent months: extremely slow "Check for updates." Previously we've seen this problem be fixed by updates to the Windows Update Client (WUC). But recently that hasn't been enough this summer. Fixing the problem has required installing particular Security Updates for Windows kernel-mode drivers and Microsoft Graphics Component.

To avoid glacial waits for updating a fresh install of Win7 SP1 (base reference)

• Download the updates below using Windows Update Catalog (requires IE unless you use this trick)
• Disable internet access* -- unplugging your ethernet cable or turning off your WIFI
• Stop WU service* -- "Start" > {type in} "Services" > {Enter} > "Windows Update" > {rt click} "Stop"
• Install the following updates in order (either each one manually [requires reboots**] or as a batch)

1. KB2533552 (might be already installed)
2. KB3020369 - April 2015 servicing stack update
3. KB3138612 - March 2016 WUC update
4. KB3168965 - July 2016 Windows kernel-mode update
5. KB3164033 - June 2016 Microsoft Graphics Component update
6. KB3145739 - April 2016 Windows Graphics Component update
7. KB3109094 - Dec. 2016 Windows kernel-mode update
8. KB3078601 - Aug. 2015 update to fix TrueType / OpenType font vulnerability

NOTE: as of Aug 2016 Patch Tuesday, there's another update that looks like it needs to be installed too:

9. KB3177725 - Aug. 2016 Windows kernel-mode update

* If WU service is running and/or there's internet access -- manually installing an update will result in long wait times with this message being displayed: "Searching for updates"
** WU service will restart after a boot; stop it again after each reboot.

Afterwards, re-enable your internet access and reboot. Windows Update should automatically start and quickly list all the available updates for your fresh Win7 machine.

I did this last month and it worked wonderfully well. After plugging my ethernet cable back in, "Check for updates" took less than 30 minutes to find all the MS Updates needed to make my fresh Win7 SP1 current.

Having just done clean re-install of W 7 Home Premium SP1 and to be safe from W10 have also installed GWX Control Panel from The Ultimate Insider. Worked for me up to now and he advised not to take it down when they started charging for W10 just to be safe. Ultimate Outsider - Software Downloads

No... there's been some changes

1st, MS has disabled the GWX app, so there's no need for GWX Control Panel anymore

2nd, the slow Scan for Updates has been fixed by the June 2016 Windows Update Client and the Sep 2016 Servicing Stack

So the current list is now simply this:

1. KB2533552 (might be already installed)
2. KB3172605 - July 2016 rollup containing June 2016 WUC
3. KB3177467 - Sept 2016 Servicing Stack

Note Well: that the Servicing Stack must be installed by itself after a reboot (so there are no pending Windows Updates changes)

As concerns updates to avoid... the main telemetry update to avoid is:

HOWEVER, MS is now offering the cumulative Security Monthly Quality Rollups so that means the telemetry updates will be installed unless you only install the Security Only rollups.

1) Should I install KB3177467 before or after KB3172605? I'm asking this cos I goggled this a day ago, and it says, that you have to install "Servicing" before "Rollup", but "Rollup" has earlier number so I'm a bit confused...

2) Also should I do "disable internet/WUS steps" you described in your previous post? Again, this got similar section called "Steps to take after Windows installation", but it has some additional steps, so I'm a bit confused here too...

1) I'd follow Dalai's advice and install the Servicing Stack first... even though it was released after the July rollup

2) Either procedure works (I've tried both) the point is to have WU Client service stopped... so that it doesn't try to do a "search for updates" during a manual install.

So just this from your post should be enough?

And then just click on updates exe's, no need to use CMD commands, correct?
I will try in a few days and then post results here.
