This update enables the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This tracking service collects data about functional issues in Windows.
This update is to flag Windows 10 as being available and assist in the upgrade? If so I'll probably hide it for now.

It's one of the purposes, at least - there are 4 or 5 of them, all dealing with different aspects.

Can you point me to more info about this KB please?

Meanwhile pending some updates I can install and confirm that there are no further errors shown (at which point I can mark this as solved), I'd like to thank you for your tremendous and sustained efforts in helping me with this thorny issue. I really do owe you and whenever I'm in your neck of the woods I'll definitely be buying you a couple of rounds of the very best, or whatever is your tipple of choice.

The official release is here... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3022345/
- which doesn't exactly tell us much!
As far as rumour goes, it's said to be specifically aimed at smoothing the upgrade to Windows 10 when it's released.

Of course I read the KB article already but it was not helpful, to say the least (but not surprising either). I was just intrigued when you said it has 4 or 5 purposes and wanted to know what those were. Interestingly, I'm now being offered this as a Recommended update, so it's no longer marked as Optional. Hmm...

Meanwhile I'm now seeing this Patch Tuesday's 23-odd updates for Office and Windows, and they're downloading as I type. Fingers crossed they'll all install without incident. Would that be sufficient to declare your efforts a total success, or would you want to take a look at the CBS etc. logs one last time?

Furthermore, is it safe to run Disk Cleanup and select the Windows Update cleanup item? I don't want to go through all this again if that was the reason for the corruption in the first place.

Update: I keep getting Error Code 80072EE2 when I check for updates. Checked and seems this might be a connectivity issue or the WU servers being busy, yet other systems using the same connection are able to find and install updates? Could this be connected to the previous corruption somehow?

Check the network settings for this machine - They may have been corrupted/hijacked.

Open and Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command
IPCONFIG /ALL
post the results.
then run the following command.
NETSH WINSOCK RESET

reboot as advised and try Windows Update again.

Apparently it was a temporary hiccup just with this particular PC (why only this one always?!) and now WU works fine. All updates installed. No more errors. CheckSUR log is still clean. sfc reports no errors just like it always did. As of now I'm going to mark this as solved.

I would like to again place on record my sincere appreciation for your help though. This community is truly fortunate to have you around ready and willing to ride to the rescue of anyone afflicted with system errors.

Is there a guide

Hi Noel,

You are a legend with correcting registry corruption!

Do you have a guide on what changes you are making to the components hive in order to repair errors?
Specifically CSI C Mark Deployment Missing errors?

I have been comparing a good hive to a broken one and cannot see what the difference is to fix it.

I'd be grateful if you could shed any light please.

Thanks,
Mike
