Some Help with Microsoft 7 Updates

Well, I have a badly messed up computer my friend gave me to figure out what is going. You love these, "it's been great for 2 years, but it just started to act up". When? "Oh not sure"

So here is what I have done
    Ran programs
ADWCleaner - lots found and had it fix them all
Installed and ran Malwarebytes found 9 more (mostly pups)

    CCLeaner

    Things I did
Went to the "temp" and the %temp%" folders and cleared them out (lots of junk)
Uninstalled a lot of old apps like both Flash Players and Java and installed newer ones
    Firefox was updated to 38.0.1

Now that's what was done. But it has problems as I get various BSOD's, Explorer crashing just unstable. So I stopped and decided to look at their Microsoft updates and man do they have all of them installed, even ones that do jack up the system. I also found some NET 4.0 installations that went bad (my intent later is to uninstall all the 4.0 to start over again). So I have been uninstalling the ones that are unnecessary and the system is becoming more stable. But, I noticed that when I went to "re-check for updates" I get an error every time. I tried the "turn off updates" get out and then go back in and set it to "Install, but let me choose" and the updates appeared. But the history of updates are all gone. I checked the Software D folder and the updates are in there and the Power Shell shows the updates so they are there. But they do not show up in the history. I was reading the tutorial about resetting the updates, but I am not sure that is the way to go with this so just wondering how should I proceed?

I ran Avast quick scan and found more viruses and deleted them. Now the system does not start, only prompts me to repair. I will try a restore point.

So as mentioned a messed up system, but I am interested in getting back the history once I figure out the repair

    Thanks. Windows 7 Home 64-bit.

UPDATE - running memtest86 and I am getting errors, once done I will swap out the memory sticks and try some other ones I have

Nevermind, friend just wants to reformat entire drive and reload windows. But still get new memory.
