Says my key is only for upgrading, not activation?

I'm trying to re-install win7 again and I'm trying to use the same key I've always had, but it's telling me it's not valid as it's only for upgrading, not fresh installs?

How is this possible when it is the original key?

How do I fix this so it activates properly?

Define original key? Was the OS ever upgraded to Windows 7. Did you do the original install? Anyway have a look at this Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Original key that came with my original win7 install DVD that I used to install it again with. This wasn't an upgrade, but a new clean install on a new SSD.

OK, fair enough, had to ask and confirm though. It's a full Retail DVD right, not a lower priced upgrade version? Just want to confirm that the original install wasn't an upgrade to an already installed OS. If it's a full Retail disk you shouldn't be getting that message.

If it's activated, I don't think you need to do the second upgrade install.

    From post #6
yes full retail version, says "backup disc not for resale"
Very strange wording ("backup disc not for resale")

Where did you get this DVD from?

That is NOT a retail disk!
    it's an OEM disk.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report -

    https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
