UpdateError: 80070424 for Security Update for SQL Server 2008 svc pk 3

I downloaded and installed the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64 based Systems (KB947821), but nothing appears to happen after the installation completes. The file that was downloaded is - Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu.
Step 3 says "Leave it to run uninterrupted. It may appear to freeze or hang, but this is perfectly normal. If it still hasn't finished after a few hours, then notify us in your post.", but absolutely nothing appears to be happening after the installation completes. Is there a specific process or service that needs to be running that I can check to verify that SURT is actually running?
sfc/scannow reported no problems
The error code returned is: 80070424
The update that fails is: Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321)
Is there a way to determine which installed application is associated with the the multiple SQL programs that appear in "Control Panel/Programs and Features"? Same question for the multiple C++ programs? How is anyone supposed to be able to determine which actual application program any one or more of them are associated with?
The problem with this SQL patch began in August of 2014, and I'd like to find a solution before the upgrade to windows 10 at the end of July.
Any help would be deeply appreciated.

The posted error code implies that a critical service has been uninstalled, or at least disabled.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

Those results are normal - as far as they go.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands....

SC QC TrustedInstaller
SC QC SENS
SC QC eventlog
SC QC MpsSvc

post the results...

Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

That all looks normal as well.
I'll have to have a think and come back to you...

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

You have a number of services and drivers failing to load - some of them for good reason, but others questionable.

This one concerns me most...
Quote:
The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service depends on the Shell Hardware Detection service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
Not sure about this one?
Quote:
The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service terminated with service-specific error The specified resource name cannot be found in the image file..
This one belongs to Malwarebytes MBAE...
Quote:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
ESProtectionDriver
This one is common, and I think can be ignored...
Code:
The ScRegSetValueExW call failed for Start with the following error:
Access is denied.
Yours is the second machine inside a week where Outlook is objecting to the Kaspersky Addin - you may want to disable the addin until Kaspersky update it.

There's nothing definitive there.

I do not however that you may be getting non-genuine notifications? a couple of errors indicate that the machine failed the self-test at the beginning of the month.

If you're still getting non-genuine notifications, please post an MGADiag report.
