Windows 7: Windows 7 or Windows 10

Windows 7 or Windows 10

As we know, free upgrade from 7 to 10 is available. How many of you prefer stay put and how many will take up the offer?

In my circumstances, it seems that it is safer to keep Windows 7 due to a few reasons:

I just use computers to do something relatively basic - a few letter, simple spreadsheet and some video editing. Windows 7 works very well and I am not sure if Windows 10 will give any improvement.

Some software I am using is quite old e.g. Office 2003, I am not sure if I can still use it after the upgrade. I am even worried that my Sony HD Writer (come with the video cam) may not be compatible if I update to 10.

I am not a technology geek, and I may find it difficult to use 10 although 7 is very easy

Any comment / suggestion / opposition ?

I think everyone knows by now that I'm staying with Win 7. Win 10 has nothing new that is of interest to me, I would lose WMC and Gadgets, both of which are critical for me, I like Win 7s GUI better, I know all of my hardware and software is working just fine in Win 7, and Win 7 is currently meeting my needs. In other words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

There aren't much programs for win10 yet, so I would stay with win7.

Most programs should run just fine on Win 10. However, some of mine have gray hair growing on them so there might be a compatibility issue with. Some hardware drivers may need updating but it's still to soon to tell. Even if I was interested in getting Win 10, I would wait a while before getting it (I refuse to call it upgrading) to make sure their weren't any surprises, problems, etc.

I have been running the Win 10 Preview (on a separate hard drive) for testing my recording studio software (Sonar) and hardware. It all tests out so I'll be upgrading my Win 8.1 systems (2) to Win 10. However, I won't be upgrading my Windows 7 installation as it is needed for an RS232C interface application to transfer embroidery patterns to my wife's Singer Embroidery Machine. The USB/RS232C interface only has Win 7 drivers and the drivers do not work on Win 8/8.1 even if installed in a compatibility mode (this is noted on the interface vendor's site).

Well, I plan on upgrading on a couple of my machines that have W7 and W8 that don't get a lot of use as to see how the upgrade process goes. If there are problems then I'll deal with them as they come. I can always restore using an image or do a clean install if worse comes to worse.

I will likely upgrade, but only because I'm building a new PC late this year. My current intention is to put Windows 7 on it (if I have to), run 7 briefly to confirm that the new hardware is sound, and then upgrade to 10. Maybe I'll be able to install 10 without ever installing 7, I dunno.

Windows 7 will be EOL in less than 5 years. I could stay with it for 3 or 4 more years, but I don't have any reason to think that the "newest" Windows in 2018 will be any better than Windows 10 will be in December 2015.

I don't expect to be either amazed or highly disappointed in Windows 10. I'll likely go through some swearing and frustration with the new interface over the first month, but I don't expect any long-term issues.

My intent is to make it look and act as much like Windows 7 as possible.

I have no use for most of the "improvements". Tiles, the "store", touch screens, Cortina/Cortana whatever it is, ad nauseum. I may not even notice the "under the hood" changes, which is fine. I just hope to be able to operate successfully on a new platform with some shelf life.

I reserve the right to change my mind entirely over the next few months, depending on the as yet unrevealed details of licensing (will I retain my current "retail" status in every respect), reversion to Windows 7, or software compatibility.
