Thanks Noel, I really appreciate your help here in a big way. I'll relay your message!

I was about to click on "use recommended settings" in the screencap below, and it sounds like that's probably the best thing to do - will that do to set up the windows firewall? I'll see what IT at my school says, and find out why it was disabled. This laptop was just reformatted, so I've only been using it very recently thankfully, not a significant amount of internet exposure yet.

And here's the results from Mbam:

Seems like I was lucky to have only 1 hit in a temp folder?

I'm not seeing the attachments?
- doesn't matter, though yes, you're very lucky (and it probably helps that everyone pretty much is behind a NAT firewall in the form of their broadband router internet connection).

Let's try this...
OPen an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - please do so, then try windows update again, and post the new windowsupdate.log file.

Still no joy! File attached.

Do you think there will be another way to claim a windows 10 copy in the future?

Also should I just click "use recommended settings" in Windows Firewall?

Hmmm, I take it there's no solution to this Windows error? Are we even able to contact Microsoft in any way/shape/form over this

Sorry - busy week!
Assuming you aren't using any third-party firewall, yes, set the Windows firewall to recommended settings.
The last error in your Windowsupdate.log is

... but with the setup that appears to have been done on your machine, I have no idea what else they may have disabled or messed up. I suspect your best option is likely to be a repair install - if you have the appropriate media - or attempting to contact MS.

You can always try their forums here... Windows - Microsoft Community - but whether you'll get much more out of them I don't know!
